Darkmore Penitentiary 2 - Caroline Peckham Page 0,5

wrists, the metal shimmering a little as it caught the light. I couldn’t see a keyhole on either of them and I wondered how the fuck they came off.

I finished my drink, melting the ice and pushing my finger under one of the cuffs, tugging to assess its strength.

“They’re as strong as a milkman’s asshole.”

I looked up at the deep voice, finding Sin Wilder grinning at me like a deranged motherfucker – and I guessed that was what he was, so it fit the bill. His bulky muscles were filling out his jumpsuit and his sleeves were rolled up to reveal endless ink on his dark arms.

“How’d you get in here before my pack?” I growled. “And what makes you think a milkman has a strong asshole?” Not sure why I wanted to know the answer to that second question, but call me Curious Clive.

“I don’t queue unless the notion takes me. And it didn’t take me today,” he commented with a shrug, playing with flames between his fingers. I shifted upright, lifting my chin in case the psycho fancied taking a shot at me. There never seemed to be any particular reason he flipped on people, so it was always worth being prepared. “And to answer your second question, I’d have to kill you if I told you, so are you sure you wanna know?”

“Pass,” I drawled, shrugging, but now I was seriously fucking Curious Clive about it.

Sin picked up the wall ball and tossed it against the wall and I turned my attention to the gate as Roary fucking Night stepped through next before my pack. Were all the assholes in Darkmore playing top dog today? Because I was the only number One around here. Though since Sin had seen me and Rosalie together, he was still messing with my damn head by pretending he owned me. Of course, I had to play along with that shit until I could get some leverage on him in return. Which I was working on daily.

“Someone’s mighty keen to find out when little Rosalie Oscura is getting out of the hole,” Sin said thoughtfully as he bounced the ball against the wall again and he glanced down at his hand where magical writing would be revealing itself to him about the open jobs. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that would you, kitten?”

“Fuck off,” I growled and Roary glanced our way as he wandered towards the wall.

“First thing you’ve ever said that I agree with,” he snarled venomously, glaring at Sin and that got my interest real piqued. He’d tried to beat my head in over the key not that long ago, but he’d never looked at me with as much hate as that.

Roary had caught me in a sour as shit mood the day after my return from Quentin and had gotten in a few good punches when he’d sprung me in the library. For some reason, he’d decided not to challenge me with magic or tear into me in his Order form in the yard. No, Roary Night had wanted to spill my blood with his bare hands, and he’d gotten his wish. But I’d left plenty of dents on him too. Roary had broken my nose before the guards had intervened. And maybe I’d relished some of that pain in penance for being fucking stupid enough to lose that key. Looked like they’d been planning to change the cuffs though, so we would have lost access to our magic anyway.

As my pack spilled into the compound, I got to my feet to seize the opportunity before they arrived, striding toward Sin and Roary, flicking my fingers as I cast a silencing bubble. “Oh yeah? And why’s that, asshole?”

Roary looked to me like he was assessing whether he could be bothered to tell me. But with another glance at Sin – who had a deadly ass glint in his eyes – he did. “Sin set the Belorian loose. Rosa could have died. We all fucking could have.”

“That true?” I rounded on Sin with acid in my veins. My intel from the wall jobs suggested Rosalie had been captured because she’d been cornered by the Belorian on level eight. Cain had found her before it had killed her then locked her up for attacking him. But why she would have done that, I couldn’t figure out.

Sin shrugged. “She asked me to.”

“She explicitly told you not to actually,” Roary hissed, taking a step toward him and squaring his huge shoulders.

“Why
