A Crown Of Smoke And Ash - Sloane Murphy Page 0,58

Levi says, his head hanging. “It does not make any sense.”

I stiffen at his words, because if what Easton said was true, then he’s wrong.

“What’s wrong, Remy?” Roman asks, his head tilted, as if scenting my fear.

“I’ve heard that term before… Shadow Walker,” I tell them. “I didn’t think anything of it when one of my brothers mentioned it. Figured it was some weird nickname about me being stealthy, but then when Easton attacked the manor, he said they were here for me, because I was a Shadow Walker. But that can’t be possible, can it?”

I look to Levi, the others do the same. “Only Angels can be Shadow Walkers.”

Well, I’m not an Angel, even if I am of Angel blood. So Easton was obviously talking shit.

“I need to look into this more. It is good that you will be away, Remy. I do not want you anywhere near this glass,” Levi says, his brow furrowed. “I need to look into this more. Find out if there is any other way, I need to speak to the hybrid.”

I gulp, I’ve tried not to think about the prisoner in our basement, despite reassurances that there is nothing human or good about the creature, I can’t help but dislike the idea of torture.

He looks to Kain who nods, agreeing to go with him. “I can go through the journals, and the files we got. See if there’s any mention of it in there?” Creek offers, and Levi nods to him.

“Yes, we need to know how much they have, before we move forward any further. Any information we can find will be useful. Roman, you and Remy should leave today.”

“Hold on a minute, I’m not going to run away when shit gets tough.” I say, “I want to help.”

“You will help us, by letting us know that you are safe, mon amour.” Kain says softly. “We cannot do what we must, focus as we should, if a part of us is focused on you, worrying for your safety. You being with Roman, with the packs, doing what is needed for the bigger picture, that is helping.”

“I guess,” I sigh, I hate feeling sidelined, but he’s not wrong. Having the packs on our side will be a huge help if and when we have to face whatever it is that’s coming, because something is coming, the rogues are building to something, I can feel it in my bones. “I guess we’re leaving today.”

I look to Roman who nods. “Give me a few hours to get the plane sorted, and we’ll head out. We just need to get to the airstrip.”

“I’ll take you,” Creek offers, and I smile at him while Roman nods.

“That’s sorted then. You better go pack, Princess.”

I sit on my bed, bag in front of me, hardly a thing in it beyond my swords, and some fighting gear, just in case, wondering if leaving right now is the right thing to do. It seems selfish and weak of me to leave when the danger becomes seemingly real, but I have a feeling that my only way to stay, would be to leave the manor, and have every single one of them pissed off at me.

I sigh, I hate feeling like I’m useless and whiney, but being surrounded by men who refuse to let me help is frustrating as fuck. Especially when I know I can help. Though Roman would argue that without me, the packs won’t be able to see what Hunters can be.

Apparently in past lives, I didn’t meet all of the packs, just his, and one other that lives on the other side of the country.

My door opens, and Kain pops his head through, smiling at me as he enters, shutting the door behind him.

“You look frustrated,” he says with a sad smile.

“I just hate running away, especially when others can be hurt just as much as I can. It’s good and well keeping me safe, but what about you guys?” He sits beside me on the bed, and gathers me in his arms, lifting me into his lap.

“We will be fine, we have faced greater dangers than this.” He tries to reassure me, but it doesn’t soothe me.

“So have I. I have never before run in the face of danger. To do so now makes me feel, less than,” I admit.

“You are a new Hunter, Remy. Not even at the end of your awakening yet. When we have faced these dangers before, you had been a matured Hunter. Protected
