watching over all of us in case there was an actual threat.

When Rudy got back, he was pissed.

“I don’t know yet which fucking drunken idiot pulled that bullshit false alarm, especially after my and my woman’s house was set on fire last weekend, nearly costing us Joelle, but whoever you are, you’re a callous fucking idiot and if I figure out who you are, the asshole you are, you’ll be lucky if we don’t kick you out. If you’re a woman instead of a member, you’ll be lucky if you’re allowed on the premises when I’m done with you. Everyone, go to fucking bed. Tomorrow there’s some shit we gotta do to get the fuckin’ fire inspector off my back. Thanks a fuckin’ bunch.” He stormed off.

Yikes.

I had never seen Uncle Rudy that angry.

I didn’t look for Christian in the group; I went to bed, thankfully not running into him in the hallway.

Jenna offered to stay with me, but I didn’t want anyone near me. I wanted to be alone. I cried myself to sleep.

The next morning was spent doing a group trip to Costco, and getting everything ready for the shower. And letting the girls distract me helped me not have too much time in my head reliving what’d happened the night before.

Not everyone stayed, though. Dad went home, Spencer went too, citing club business, and I hadn’t seen Christian all day.

We had the bridal shower and then instead of shower games, we all played poker and the money we played with would go to Vic and Trace for their honeymoon. Halfway into that, many of the men joined in for the shower and pulled out wads of cash for Vic and Trace.

I mostly stayed back on snack patrol and bartending duty. I tried to paint a smile on and tell everyone I was just fine, that I’d just gotten a bit spooked at the fire alarm on top of being a bit drunk. Everyone let it go.

Plenty of people grumbled during the day about the fire alarm. I heard a few people in clusters of mini conversations speculating about who’d done it.

One of the new prospects? Someone’s new girlfriend? Someone waved it off, saying it was probably just one of us being a dumbass and not thinking it’d trigger Rudy after his house had been set on fire the week before by our enemy.

I heard Ella ask about Fork at breakfast (which Ella and her mom totally pulled off mostly without me, which I regretted, but got hugs and ‘don’t worry about it’ replies from them both when I turned up in the kitchen an hour later than I’d told them to be there) and Brady replied that when he’d been up early working out, he “saw Fork pull out around seven thirty. Must be gone home.”

“He is, he has a few to-dos on his agenda,” my dad had replied.

No one asked questions. I certainly didn’t.

Christian Fucking Forker. I didn’t know whether to be more angry or more humiliated. I also didn’t want to see his face again any time soon in order to have the time to figure out which emotion would win out.

Sunday night, I was back in Aberdeen and in my room avoiding human contact.

Monday, I worked at the dealership with Ella for half a day and then at the Roadhouse for the other half. Tuesday morning, I had to myself, but Tuesday afternoon while I was at The Roadhouse helping with prep for dinner, Dad had just gone through the day’s mail and… well: the shit hit the fan.

The kitchen was buzzing with activity as we were getting stuff done ahead of dinner rush. I was busy rolling freshly laundered black and grey checked napkins into bundles that contained cutlery and passing them to Leanne, who was filling up the silver buckets we put on the tables at dinner and lunch with sugar, sweetener, condiments, and the napkin/cutlery bundles.

“…and if she tries to horn in on my action again…” Leanne made a stabbing motion in the air with a steak knife.

“I know who she is,” I informed her.

She was talking about that biker bunny, Juicy, who had ripped Leanne’s chosen man-meat away on Saturday night at The Roadhouse while we were away. Yep: Juicy, who had given Fork a blowjob and then been in the bathroom talking like she was an operative aborting her spy mission.

Leanne had been off-duty and at the place as a customer for a change. We’d had staff there, extra
