Broken Shadows (Shadows Landing #5) - Kathleen Brooks Page 0,58

mental treatment from a private doctor. Mr. Daniels said he hasn’t talked to the actress since shortly after the break-in. Mr. Daniels believes firing half her staff was an attempt to get his attention about the abduction. Both Mr. Hexter and Mr. Daniels have been in touch with Miss Jessamine’s supposed new legal and PR teams. However, they claim the signed contracts are not signed by Miss Jessamine. Our investigators are currently meeting with them. Due to threats from the paparazzi, we were left with no choice but to come forward with this story. We are asking the public not to approach Miss Jessamine if you see her, but to contact us immediately.”

A phone number appeared on the bottom of the screen, but Trent was already running for his car. Harper was only a half step behind him.

Trent was sure he didn’t breathe until he flung open the door to the diner and had Skye in his arms. It was only then that he heard Peter Castle yelling into the phone, saw Granger and Kord take off out of the diner, and saw the tears in Karri’s eyes.

“What’s happened?”

“Peter’s on the phone with Agent Shaw. After you dropped me off, one of Star Power’s goons stopped me. I played it off as being a local named Emma Kate and the angry sheriff running at him was my boyfriend. I don’t think he knew it was me.” Trent crushed her to him. He needed to feel her in his arms to know she was safe.

“I’m so sorry.” Trent heard Skye’s muffled apology from where she’d pressed her face against his chest.

“For what?”

“For bringing this trouble to you and to Shadows Landing.”

“We need to get you out of here,” Peter said as soon as he hung up his phone. “There are tourists in town and the last thing we want to happen is for one of them to snap a picture of you.”

“Is hiding really the only option I have?”

“Yes. For now. My friend Ryan Parker and a local attorney are racing over to Morgan’s office to make sure she’s safe and not being questioned without representation. Granger called Olivia, but then they got a hit on the car the Star Power man was in just outside of town. While they distract him, we need to get you to Ryker’s house. Let’s go.”

“Here you go, hon.” Mary Jane shoved a plastic bag the size of a shopping cart into her hand. “You need some comfort food. As soon as I saw the news, I told them to whip you up some biscuits and gravy for breakfast and some shrimp and grits for lunch. I also put in a whole pineapple upside down cake for you, bless your sweet little heart. If you need anything, you just call and we’ll find someone to run it out to you, you hear?”

Skye hugged the waitress without any hesitation. “Thank you. You’re all so kind. I’m sorry for any trouble this causes y’all.”

Mary Jane cringed as did most of the people in the diner. “Bless your heart. Y’know some people just can’t do the accent and that’s okay.”

Skye tossed up her hands as Trent took the bag from her. “Is it really that bad?”

“Yes!” came the resounding reply.

“If you can’t be born a Southerner,” Miss Ruby said as she reached out and patted her hand, “you can marry one.”

Everyone sent her smiles and winks. Trent scowled at Harper who shrugged as if saying she had no idea what they were talking about. Not that Trent had mentioned marriage—yet.

“Can Karri come with us for the day?” Skye asked him and he felt horrible. He didn’t want to isolate her as Jim and Lenny had.

“Of course. You never have to ask that. Your friends are my friends.” Trent bent and placed a kiss on the top of her head as Peter moved toward them.

“I’ll drive you, Karri.”

Karri nodded but watched worriedly as Trent placed his free hand on the small of Skye’s back and led her from the diner. He whisked her into the car and had her safely in Ryker’s guesthouse before she could blink.

Trent, Skye, Peter, Karri, and Harper filled the living room as Skye broke out breakfast from the diner and passed it around.

“It’s my dream. The darkness is coming,” Trent heard Karri whisper.

“What dream?” Peter had heard her too. Karri’s face turned red and Trent wondered what kind of dream this really was.

“Karri had a dream that Shadows Landing was our home and that
