Brick's Fight (Infernal Sons MC #5) - Carol Dawn Page 0,14
taken, where I was taken to, and for how long. I can tell he’s reluctant to share the next bit. I nod against his chest and wait for him to continue.
“She wasn’t given much food over the course of the six months,” he says. I try and focus on the vibration in his chest as he speaks. “What she was given was just enough to keep her alive.”
He goes on to tell them about the drugs. I keep my eyes squeezed shut for fear of judgment. I’m not sure how long I sit here, focusing on the soft purr of Brick’s voice before someone demands my attention.
I look up to find Brick’s mom staring at me with wonder.
“Do you realize how strong of a woman you are?” she asks. “Not many people would have survived what you did. I’m sorry that I didn’t think to ask if this food was okay. Do you want me to make you a broth instead?”
Feeling grateful for her kindness, I grab my paper.
No, thank you. I really should try and get back on solid foods. I’ll just take it easy.
After reading what I wrote, she smiles, she changes to the topic.
“So, Sophia, do you want to see my favorite horse when we’re finished with dinner?”
“Horsey,” Sophia says.
I climb off of Brick’s lap, much to his dismay, and grab my plate. I am so hungry.
I decide to try the mashed potatoes first. Flavor explodes in my mouth, and it takes everything in me not to groan in pleasure. I wait a couple of minutes before trying another bite.
My stomach doesn’t seem to be reacting to it, so I go all in. In minutes, my plate is cleared, and I feel incredibly full.
Brick looks at me with an amused smirk.
“Would you like more?” he asks.
I shake my head and glare at his smirk. It’s both annoying and sexy.
I’m leaning back on the couch, letting my stomach settle when it hits me. I don’t think, I just hop up and run until I’m outside. I get as far from the porch as I can before everything I’ve eaten rushes right back out.
I want to scream in frustration, but I feel drained. I fall to my knees and just cry. I cry for the lost girl I used to be. I cry at being weak and useless. I just sit there and cry until I have no tears left.
I barely notice that the whole time I was being cradled and comforted by my safe place. My Brick. I could have sat there in his arms forever, but the sound of a car approaching stole my attention.
Great, more people.
“Baby, look at me,” Brick demands. I do as he asks.
“Are you okay?”
I nod my answer because it’s the truth. I am okay. Just a little embarrassed.
“We’ll go inside and make you a soft protein shake,” he tells me. “You have to have something in your system. The next time you venture to try solid foods, you get a yogurt.”
I smile at the scowl on his face. I do agree with him, but I don’t have my paper, and I’m not yet ready for him to hear my damaged voice.
With a satisfied nod, he kisses my forehead and stands us up.
“I can tell that you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything,” he tells me. “If you want, I can show you to your room so you can rest.”
I consider his suggestion for a few seconds before shaking my head. It’s true, I am feeling overwhelmed, and I love that he knew that. But, at the same time, I’m really enjoying being around so many people.
“Brother, I brought you your monster back,” a man shouts from the car that just pulled in.
“He isn’t a monster, Hawk,” a smaller man gets out of the car. “You’re just jealous because I think I love him more than I do you.”
The larger man grunts, causing the smaller one to laugh.
“Sweetheart,” Brick says, guiding me to the newcomers. “These here are my brothers, Hawk and Slim. Brother’s, this is my woman, Jessa.”
His woman? I hear Brick chuckle and realize that I’ve stopped walking and am frozen to the ground.
“Get used to it,” the small man says. “When they claim something as theirs, they become cavemen. Hi, I’m Phoenix, but pretty much everyone calls me Slim. And the glaring ape over there is my man, Hawk. It’s very nice to meet you, Jessa.”
The small man, Slim, walks up to me and holds out his hand. I’m momentarily
