seriously fucking up their day’s plans.
Not to mention, this was the second time in a few days that they were under attack, seemingly by the same organization.
Bennett’s tiger was a massive animal. His paws were the size of two of hers. Though his body was lean and muscular, he was an eight-hundred-pound predatory beast. There was little telling how badly his rage and his skill would translate into a killing machine. Time would tell.
The six men approached them with guns. They hadn’t fired yet, and Dakota wondered why. They were either trying to salvage their bullets, or those were not ordinary guns. Could they be tranquilizers? Something like a taser? If only one of them were to shoot, she could gauge what they were dealing with.
Bennett didn’t wait for the men to attack.
He pounced like the beast he was.
His jaw closed on one of the men’s elbows, and he pulled at the limb with sharp fangs. It tore away with ease, spurting blood everywhere. The injured man stumbled back as he screamed and screamed in pain. There was no time to mourn the fact that a man had been killed. Five more were firing their guns at them, intent on dispatching them.
Yup. Those were genuine bullets. They had most likely been trying to be economical until the attack started.
How these goons had been able to find them while they were at the farmer’s market was beyond her. They had both been cautious as they left the house and again as they left the farmer’s market.
They hadn’t been followed.
It seemed to be nothing but pure coincidence to meet them there. That was a sobering thought. What if they had literally been on the way to the house where one man lay in the middle of his change while the other two were unarmed super geeks? It would have been a blood bath.
Corey and Stuart weren’t her people, but they were like brothers to his mate, which made them important to her. A new kind of rage filled her, and she struck out a paw, claws out. They caught their mark, slicing into one of the men’s thighs. Blood gushed out, and he dropped his assault rifle to place his hands on the wound. The blood was a deep color, the kind that only came out when an artery was nicked. Once again, Dakota wanted to feel bad.
She had never killed before she had taken the job with Nick. This was new to her, and she knew she was going to need some pretty insane therapy to get over the feelings she was having at taking a life.
Even if it was in self-defense.
One of the attackers, a tank with a semi-automatic, was unloading all of his ammunition at her. A few of the bullets hit her, erupting into painful blossoms. The wounds were nothing, not hitting anything vital inside of her. She would leave, that was certain. It didn’t make it any less painful.
Dakota went full tigress on him. She mauled his thigh and tore at whatever limb she could latch on to. It didn’t take long for the man to be incapacitated. From a quick glance to the side, she could see that Bennett was fairing just as well as her.
He was taking to being a shifter quite well.
Four of the six men were down for the count. Bennett had eviscerated three of them all by himself. By all accounts, they should have kept fighting, but Bennett nudged her with a solid shoulder, indicating the clearing. They were close enough to the house that they could make it to warn the others that they were under attack. Dakota was happy to see that Bennett had gone to the same conclusion as her. They hadn’t been followed. The men had actually been on the way to the house when they spotted them. They were on the way to the house for the serum.
Bennett launched himself at the car and chewed at one of the tires with his teeth until the thing blew. They two remaining bad guys would definitely not be able to follow them with that car and Ben’s own ride has totaled in the ditch.
Thinking as one, Dakota and Bennett turned to the wooded clearing and ran. It was the run of a lifetime. Dakota was pretty sure they were breaking the sound barrier with their speed. Her paws had barely enough time to touch the ground and launch her next step. She was running because lives depended on it.
