not going to abort it.”

Well, that was to the point. Matt was grateful Adam could read him well enough to parse what he was trying to say. At least that much of Adam was still the same, and that helped stabilize Matt’s world a little.

Matt opened his eyes to consider Adam, who looked a little hurt. “Look, I know you. I honestly thought you’d say that, but you’ve already blindsided me twice today.”

The hurt faded from Adam’s eyes, and he actually smiled. “Yeah, I guess that’s fair.”

“Um, so, the nausea is morning sickness?”

Adam made a face and nodded. “Yeah. Which means it’s not going to go away for possibly as much as ten weeks.”

“Ew.” Matt winced. “That sucks.”

“Hey, you’re not the one going through it!”

Matt tilted his head. “No. But I’ll do anything I can to help. I mean, it is 50 percent my fault.”

Adam snorted. “True.”

“So, what happens now?”

“Nothing. At least not for another few weeks. I made an appointment with the doctor I see for my heats—he does obstetrics too—for three weeks from now. He’ll give me an official test to confirm, though I, uh, took three home tests.” He coughed and Matt blinked.

“Three?”

“Yeah, uh, I was convinced I wasn’t. So when the first one came up positive, I took the other in the box, thinking the first one had to be bad. When the second one came up positive, I told myself it was a bad batch. But the other was a totally different type of test, different manufacturer, different everything, with a digital readout and a mess of other stuff. I couldn’t lie to myself that much. So when it came up positive and even said I was approximately seventeen days along…”

“So. Three weeks until the doctor’s appointment. Okay.” Matt blew out a breath. “And then what? And what are we going to do in the meantime?”

“Hey, why are you here, anyway?” Adam asked. “I thought you were going to take notes?”

“Parker is for us.”

“Ugh. His notes suck,” Adam grumbled.

Matt shrugged. “You didn’t really think I’d be able to wait another three hours after a text conversation like that, did you?”

Adam’s cheeks reddened. “I felt kind of stupid about that after I sent the first one. I’m sorry. I should have just waited.”

“Oh hell no. I’d have wanted to know right away. I’m glad you did.”

Adam sighed. “Well, nothing for it now. Do you have the notes and homework from this morning?”

“Yeah, in my bag. Are you going to be able to go to classes?”

“I have to.” Adam shrugged. “The morning sickness could last the entire first trimester. I’m not about to miss two months of classes. I’ll just have to figure out how to manage it.”

Matt nodded. “Well, whatever I can do to help, of course. Including hold your hair.”

Adam blushed again. “You don’t have to do that.”

“Dude. I got you pregnant. It’s the least I can do.”

“You’re so going to say that a lot, aren’t you?”

Matt grinned. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Uh-huh.” Adam shook his head. “Asshole.”

“I don’t deny it.” Matt dropped his gaze to Adam’s belly again. “Holy shit,” he whispered as it hit him again. “We’re pregnant.”

Adam raised an eyebrow at him. “What’s this ‘we,’ Kemosabe?”

Matt rolled his eyes. “We. Because I’m not about to let you go through it alone, am I?”

Adam considered him for a long moment, then nodded. “Yeah, you wouldn’t, would you?”

Matt didn’t like Adam’s tone of voice. Despite the fact that they’d admitted they loved each other, something seemed off about Adam’s mood. He certainly didn’t seem nearly as happy about the baby as Matt was. Or maybe it wasn’t about the baby, per se, but about the situation as a whole. It could simply be that Adam was still in a bit of shock. Matt didn’t think it was because it was his baby, but that didn’t clear much up in his head.

It occurred to him in that moment that Adam had also neatly dodged Matt’s questions about what they were going to do. He was sure “keeping the baby” was a foregone conclusion, but that was only one piece of the big pile of things they needed to face. It bothered him that Adam hadn’t wanted to talk about it, but Matt had to assume Adam just hadn’t thought through it yet. Matt wanted to go over it together, help figure everything out—would they move into one of their parents’ houses? Or would they get their own place? Money was going to be
