The Alpha's Nanny - Sam Crescent Page 0,2
life. You will die with the rest of your people if they put a foot out of line.”
“I don’t have a choice?”
“You do. Are you willing to risk your life for the sake of your friends?”
****
Two days later
Winter didn’t see it as picking a life for lives. The alpha, she didn’t know his name, didn’t understand that her people hated her. They would gladly kill her for the sake of their own lives and she couldn’t justify that kind of existence.
There was a baby who needed help, love, and attention. Being chained up all day, working the fields, it wasn’t a bad job. The guards who watched them didn’t see the constant physical abuse she suffered for her care of wolves.
She didn’t have a place in the world, not a real one.
The microwave opened and she took out the bottle, testing the liquid on her arm to make sure it wasn’t too hot. She made her way back upstairs to find the little baby making soft sounds. The kind that people adored and couldn’t help but love. The sight alone was everything.
“Hello, my darling,” she said. The baby girl didn’t have a name and so she tried to think of terms of endearment for her. “Are you hungry? I bet you are. Yes, you are.”
Lifting the baby out of the crib, she moved toward the chair, then sat down, arranged her in her arms for the most comfort, and hummed softly as she fed her.
In the past two days, she’d been able to have a bath and enjoy some wonderful potatoes and salad prepared by someone. The alpha didn’t spend any time with her. From the moment he’d dragged her into his world, she’d been alone, apart from the baby for company.
The bath had been one of the most enjoyable things she’d experienced in days. She no longer stank. She only had one set of clothes and she had to wash them regularly so they didn’t smell bad.
His instructions had been clear. She wasn’t allowed to leave the house or show the baby. The curtains in the main part of the house that was visible to others were closed. The yard had a high fence and she found herself going out into the sunshine as regularly as possible.
After the baby had taken all of the bottle, she burped her and held her for a little longer, loving the scent of a newborn, before taking her downstairs with her to clean up. She loved holding her and it allowed her mind to ease as she focused on the work.
She didn’t have to fear every single gunshot or loud noise, even if it did make her jump. With the baby in her arms, she cleaned up the kitchen and started to walk toward the yard when the door opened.
The alpha walked in. The instant he did, his presence filled every single space. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and her stomach twisted. Should she bow her head? In their world, was he like royalty? She’d seen him around town during her captivity and guards offered him their respect.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Out in the yard. She likes it outside.”
He stared at her for several seconds. “Fine. I’ve got some clothes being delivered. Be back in within the hour. I want to make sure I got the right size.”
“Okay.” She didn’t like being in his company for too long. The way he glared at her always unnerved her.
She walked outside into the heat of the sunshine. Lifting up her face, she took several deep breaths.
It’s fine, Winter. It’s all fine.
The alpha terrified her. She’d seen him kill humans before and she had no doubt if she put a foot out of place, she’d be on his kill list. She didn’t want to die, nor suffer. Pain wasn’t something she particularly liked.
She set the little baby onto the ground and sat beside her. After a few short minutes, she lifted her up so that she was on her chest. This was a precarious predicament, especially if she upchucked, but letting her lie on her head for any period of time was bad. Wasn’t it? She couldn’t remember much about baby care. Only a couple of things stuck out to her, the head being one of them.
“He must have a caring bone in his body if he has you.” She stroked the girl’s cheek. “I just know it. If he didn’t care, you wouldn’t need anyone to take care
