his lead. Before I realize it, everyone in the encampment is lowering themselves to the ground and dropping their head.
What the fuck?
Turning to Kaneer, his eyes bore into me as he swivels my body to face him, clasping his hands with mine tightly. Slowly, he lowers himself to his knees in front of me, bringing us eye level. “You’ll have to forgive me for my lack of studies and not recognizing the signs. Honestly, I’ve never seen an Omega in my life. Even the times the low dwellers summoned me for procreation, I was only with a fertile Beta. I noticed your small stature, but… I was overcome by your heat, too. Can you forgive me?”
I have no idea what any of them are talking about! For the first time in my life, I’m totally flabbergasted. Speechless.
Especially with this big, bossy alien in front of me asking for forgiveness. He seems pretty sure he fucked up somehow. But never in my life would I have imagined him apologizing… to me.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
- Kaneer
MY HEAD THROBS as I consider what everyone around me is saying. The captive is right. Two days ago was the last time we all experienced a Siege. It was late in the evening, and I was discussing strategy with the teams that had come back in after searching for him.
In fact, now in hindsight… catching him was a little easy. Almost too easy. But the point is… Sunny didn’t endure the Siege. I went to check on her after I had recovered, but she seemed fine, cuddling down on all the blankets in our nest.
She was my first thought this time, too. But after all my worry, it doesn’t even affect her. What a blessing.
Staring at her unique features, I can see the confusion on her face. Turning her toward me, I hold her hands as I lower myself to my knees, determined to pay my respects as a proper Alpha male should.
My question doesn’t seem to appease her confusion. In fact, she tries to pull her hands from mine, and I’m afraid she’s going to refuse to forgive me. Strange, considering what she is, but can I really blame her?
Sunny looks around warily before leaning forward to whisper quietly in my ear. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She leans back, her eyes darting to the left to look at the convict who said his name was Pup before keeping her voice low and adding, “I don’t even really know what an Omega is.”
Almost as if talking to herself, she rambles on, “I mean yeah. I’ve heard of Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end from the Bible, but what’s he talking about…?”
Pup’s staring at her with a captivated look on his face. I divert my attention to Couffer, our encampment’s High Priest as he clambers carefully to his feet. He’s within arm’s reach as Pup answers Sunny.
“Yes… Gail explained to me that your communities on Earth do not operate the same way ours do… or did. With no Omegas and the ratio of Alphas to Betas, it’s only a matter of time before we end up with all Betas, which sounds very similar to Earth. Although she said there’s a wide variety in nationalities? That Earth inhabitants look very different from location to location?”
Sunny takes a step closer to him, walking around to look at his bindings. Without asking, she drops to her knees and begins struggling with his ankles. “This is ridiculous! I’m disgusted that they’re even treating anyone this way. I thought it was bad enough to get punished all the time and be treated like a child, but this is torture…”
I move next to her, pulling out my knife and easily releasing his feet before moving to his wrists. “Thank you. Yes, Gail told me most of your civilized countries have laws about humanity and torture. This is the kind of knowledge and teachings prophesied about in the Omega Prophecy!”
I grab his shoulder because his weight is thrown forward as his wrist bindings release. It’ll be some time before his blood circulation is reestablished properly in his limbs. I reach under his
