and not as an intrusion of his privacy. That he had the emotional depth to understand her vulnerability and was open to sharing himself with her was touching.
“I saw you as a young boy. Bringing flowers to your mother, I believe. She… rejected them,” Kira said.
“She hit me. She often did. It wasn’t all that hard or painful. It was just her way of expressing her dissatisfaction with life.”
“I’m so sorry, Brogan.”
“I’ve come to terms with it.”
Kira highly doubted that. Could anyone ever get over that kind of rejection from their parents?
“Nevertheless, I’m sorry for your pain.”
“At least I had Gran. She was a balm for my soul.”
“You loved her.”
“Very much, yes.” Brogan sighed and ran a hand over his face. “So it seems you’ve got some extra-sensory abilities. I’m not sure what to make of them, but the science side of me would love to figure out how it all works.”
“I’m not surprised. I might humor you there.” Kira smiled up at him. “I wouldn’t mind knowing how it works either.”
“You’re… really something, Kira. I think about you…” Brogan brought a hand up to brush against her cheek before entwining a lock of her hair around his finger.
“I think about you too, Brogan.”
He tugged her hair gently, pulling her closer. Then he bent forward, his lips brushing hers in the sweetest of kisses. There it was again, Kira thought as she leaned into the kiss, not wanting the contact to break. A current of energy pulsed through her at his touch. It energized her, seeming to light her up and heat her from the inside, and she wanted more of it. Kira blinked up at Brogan as he broke the kiss, feeling drugged with her need for him.
“I felt it too,” Brogan whispered. “The electricity. You’re right, Kira.”
“About what?”
“You’re magick.”
Chapter 11
Kira bowed over him, her hair curtaining around his face, closing Brogan in as if they were in their own secret world together. He traced his hands up her sides, reveling in the soft skin he found there, sighing as he found the smooth slope of her breast. Kira moaned softly in pleasure as his hand teased her nipple. The bud pebbled under his hand, her sigh echoing her desire. When he slid inside her, she sheathed him tightly, and Brogan let out his own moan of desire as the electric current he had felt from their kiss earlier that day flooded through him.
Brogan blinked awake, a sheen of sweat across his chest, and stared at the dim light of his alarm clock. Five in the morning was a fine time for an erotic dream, and he groaned, banging his head back into the pillow and covering his eyes with his arm.
He wanted her, there was no doubt about that.
Brogan thought back to their kiss earlier that day. She’d unnerved him when she’d been able to see into his past. He wondered why that particular memory had surfaced for her, but if anything, it very neatly summed up his past for her. He was just grateful that she hadn’t happened on any of his past relationships.
He relished the memory of their kiss. It was as though he could still feel it – her lips on his, the current of energy buzzing between them, like two magnets snapping together.
It was like no kiss he’d ever had before in his life.
He didn’t have the best track record with women, and that was the truth of it. Brogan had never mastered the finesse his mates had with picking up women. Instead, he’d fallen fast for pretty much any woman who had shown an interest in him, and his mates were endlessly grilling him about ignoring very obvious red flags. A hopeless romantic, he always ignored his friends’ advice until inevitably it all came crashing down around him. The problem was, Brogan always wanted to believe the good in everyone. He never believed that a woman would use him for his money or just because she was lonely, or – in one notable instance – to make her ex-boyfriend jealous. If a woman was sweet to him, Brogan would take her at her word and find himself falling.
It was why he’d sworn off dating for the last few years. Brogan had decided he couldn’t trust his own heart, and therefore, until he figured out his own issues, it was best not to enter the dating pool. Those waters were just too dangerous for him. After a few years without dating, as well as
