Oh! I will go make something to eat. Do you think she’s hungry?”
“She needs to eat,” I said, not willing to compromise on that.
The line went dead and I shook my head, knowing that my sister was very much an ‘all or nothing’ type. We would probably walk into a full six-course meal. I wasn’t about to complain though, I couldn’t cook for shit.
A small yawn and shift had me looking down at Colette as her dark eyes blinked open sleepily. A shy look invading her face as her cheekbones flushed pink.
Instead of saying anything I squeezed her closer and nodded towards the window, our warmly lit village nestled in the mountains visible through the rain as we approached.
My voice was quiet as I spoke. “I hope it’s okay, but I called my sister and asked if she would be alright with you crashing in her apartment. She is completely fine with it. Did you have a hotel booked?” I was assuming she didn’t, but I still wanted to check. Willowdale only had one Bed & Breakfast, and the owner was a member of our pack.
Relief flooded her eyes as she wrote on the pad of paper. “Haven't booked anything yet. Are you sure she doesn’t mind? I promise it will only be for a night--”
“She is excited to meet you.” I offered her a soft look, kissing the side of her temple in a natural action that had her shivering against me. I tried to not let irrational happiness flood me at how she was obviously affected by our connection.
Was now the right time to tell her that she was only staying there for one night before moving in with us? No. I’ll wait on that. Wouldn’t want her to think I’m crazy.
The bus neared the small charming station that was right over the large train station which ran through the area.
I offered her a hand. When we stood up, I easily looped her bag over my shoulder and tugged up her hood to keep her warm in the misty rain outside. I offered the driver a ‘thanks’ for both of us before lifting her over a puddle that spanned from the edge of the bus to the sidewalk.
A soft giggle came from her which warmed me.
I was curious to know why she couldn’t talk, but even that small sound from her was enough to have my wolf feeling hyper as he began to pace.
I nearly rolled my eyes as he circled her fox, bumping her gently and touching his nose to hers, before laying down.
Her fox simply rolled over and curled up next to him, letting out a small noise as the two of them got fucking comfortable. I was jealous of my magic right now. Fucking jealous that I couldn’t shift and hold her like that.
This was why being in animal form was sometimes so much more simple.
The entire Main street was lit as her eyes trailed along the road, looking at each small business or set of houses that we passed. The center of town was only a block or so ahead of us, a six-way intersection that was lit up with old-fashioned oil lamps, and a hazy dewiness that covered the center space of our local park.
I planned on giving Colette a full tour of her new home tomorrow if she let me, but for now I led her towards Bunny Bites. Unlocking the front door, Colette offered me a confused look. Oh yeah, I was a total idiot. I hadn’t explained where my sister lived.
“This is Lena’s bakery,” I explained softly. “She lives above it.”
“Hello!” My sister’s voice chimed as we walked through the back hallway and stood at the bottom of the back staircase.
Colette smiled up at my sister and I found myself once again in wonder at how my sister managed to make friends so easily. No really, one conversation, that was usually all it took for Lena. I mean not that I could blame anyone for not wanting to be friends with Colette. She was perfect. But I could already see my mate relaxing as my sister all but tackled her halfway up the stairs. I had never made friends that easily and I was far better at it than both my older brothers.
“Oh my! You are literally so pretty. I’m Lena, by the way. Also, I’m a total hugger, sorry about that.” She wasn’t sorry.
