whole town raising money to catch her stalker. “Just … please just file the report. When I get back, I’ll stop in before I go to Florida.”
“Okay. Be safe.”
“Thanks.” She hung up the phone and turned back to Stan and Margie. The looks on their faces betrayed their concern. “I can’t put you guys in danger. I can’t go.”
Margie frowned. “He’s not stalking us; our lives aren’t in danger.”
Stan glowered at Margie, then turned to Kat. “Maybe it would be better if you got out of town for a bit. Maybe things will settle.”
That was true. Kat’s head spun as she thought about everything. “But he seemed to know I was leaving. Does he know where I’ll be?”
Margie snapped her fingers. “Whoever it is probably just heard me and Stan talking about giving you a vacation. We’ve been putting together how we would convince you to take this week off.” She tapped her head. “But I don’t know who it could be.”
Stan frowned. “We really haven’t paid much attention who we were talking in front of, besides you and Kade. I wonder if Margie is right; someone overheard us.”
Margie pointed to the paper. “Clearly they know where you work and live, so … I think you should go.”
Stan pulled out his credit card. “Actually, why don’t you go to a different town? Maybe go into Wilmington and get a hotel for a couple of days. That way, no one will know where you’re going to be.”
“I don’t know.” Kat rankled knowing that her confusion and slight fear was obvious to them. She would never use his money. “No, I’m just going to go home.”
“No!” Margie smacked the car. “You can’t. We are ready to give you the week off. If you’re home, you’ll work, and you know it. You deserve time to yourself.”
Kat couldn’t help but smile at Margie’s determination.
Stan shoved his card at her. “Please. Just go. Consider it the gift you deserve for saving me from retirement oblivion.”
She tried to push the card back. “No, I couldn’t use your money.”
“Yes, you could.” Stan put it in her purse. “You can pay me back later. Go and have fun.”
Her mind raced. Could she do that? Just … go somewhere? She pulled the keys out of her pocket. “Then here’s your cabin keys.”
“No, keep those, too. Maybe you’ll bounce between places.”
Margie nodded. “Yes, and we’ll tell everyone we’re not sure where you’re at.” Her eyebrows waggled. “Then the stalker won’t know where you are.”
She liked the idea of no one knowing where she would be. “O-kay.”
Stan gestured to the car. “Go. Have fun. Don’t worry about anything.” He winked at her. “Especially Margie.”
Margie let out a light laugh, then smacked his shoulder. “Stop, Stan.”
But Kat could tell that Margie liked it.
Stan rolled his eyes at her.
They all laughed.
“Fine,” Kat said, seizing the sudden feeling of freedom. It was something she hadn’t felt in a long, long time. “I’ll do it.”
She got into the car.
Margie cheered again.
Stan held the door long enough to tell Kat, “Be safe.”
