jerk out of his arms as he continued to laugh. “Let go of me,” she said, still trying to break out of his hold.
“I talked to your sister,” he said, still laughing. “she mentioned that you were sick so I came to check up on you. I called out and when you didn’t answer”—he pulled back slightly and his smile slipped when his eyes met hers— “I let myself in with my key. The place was dark, and I thought you were sleeping. I was going to check up on you, make sure you were okay, and leave before you knew I was even here.” He smiled again. “I had no intention of getting beamed by a plunger and getting a show while at it.” His eyes moved down to the curve of her breasts, as they were still pushed up against his fully clothed chest.
“Let me go,” she said, trying once again to break free.
“Naked hugs,” he said a little breathless. “I think I deserve this after being attacked.”
“You broke in here. Scared me. I thought…” She shook her head and then stopped trying to break free from his hold. In truth, she knew there was no way to get free from him until he released her. “I fell asleep in the bath,” she said as the last of the water left the tub with a sucking sound.
“I can smell that.” He bent his head and sniffed her neck, sending goose bumps over her skin. Her knees buckled slightly as a wave of desire washed over her. “You smell like jasmine.” He brushed his lips over her skin.
She didn’t know if he’d done it intentionally, but it had the same effect on her system. She wanted him. Damn it.
Chapter Fourteen
George really had had no intention of doing anything other than checking up on a friend after talking with Kara. He’d wanted to let her know that he wouldn’t be working that night and had sent over Conner instead. But the moment he’d seen Robin, everything had changed.
Kara had sounded worried about Robin and had explained how her sister had never been sick. Not once in the past year and a half.
Kara had practically begged him to come over and check up on Robin, since due to Robins absence, she’d need Conner’s help and that they would be too busy with the event.
Getting flashed by Robin in the hallway had been the icing on the cake of a totally miserable day. He’d brooded, or so his mother and Mia had claimed.
The moment the woman had stepped in the office door, he’d remembered her. She’d been a longtime family friend. He couldn’t believe that he hadn’t placed her before seeing her. He supposed he’d been too busy yesterday to give it much thought. Besides, she’d moved to Edgeview when he’d been in middle school and hadn’t returned until after he’d left for college.
Now, she and her husband were back in Pride, and she was looking to fill some of her free time after retirement.
Since she had worked as a legal assistant for more than thirty years, he’d hired her on the spot.
That day had been filled with even more calls, along with more than half a dozen people dropping by his office for a quick chat.
The way things were going, he was going to have to set regular hours and think about hiring more part-time work to help out.
He supposed it was a good thing, but at this point, he’d hoped for a quiet day where he could think about what had happened between he and Robin.
He’d been so busy that day that he hadn’t even had a moment to himself.
He’d just finished a late-night dinner of cold pizza as he scoured over Josh’s father’s case when Kara had contacted him.
Now, with Robin’s naked body pressed up against his, he realized his mistake. He hadn’t given her the opportunity to change her mind about him.
What he needed to do was prove to her that there could be more between them. That she could grow to love him.
Everyone always said that if you loved something, you had to fight for it, which is exactly what he intended to do.
He couldn’t believe that he had almost given up so easily. The miserable day he’d had proved to him that he didn’t want to be without her. Not yet, at any rate.
He felt the soft skin of her lower back under his hands as he held her against him, and he saw desire flash
