more brazen or already married. He’s hopeful that now that he’s actually married, it’ll slow down even more.”
“Lovely.” She needed to get the snark under control. Minnie yawned and stretched her back. “Sorry. I’m still waking up. I’ve been sleeping in your room, by the way. I just fell asleep watching the live stream.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Joss admitted. “I know you like that kind of thing and was sad for you that you couldn’t be there.”
“I might have gone dress shopping,” she admitted. “I hope that’s not a problem. I’d already picked out one I wanted to wear last night, but my father wouldn’t let me buy it. I was going to have to wear something I’d already worn, which is a fashion no-no for an event like that.”
“It is?”
“Yeah. And truthfully, the dress was probably a bit too much for last night. It’s gorgeous, but bright pink probably would have stood out a bit too much at a pre-wedding ball. Enough to make other people wonder if I was trying to upstage the bride-to-be, which wouldn’t have been my intention, but not enough for them to be certain.”
“I just wear a tux.” He shrugged before standing to walk into the kitchen, propping the door open. “It’s easy.”
She heard him make coffee, something that made her sigh happily. “There were comments on how well your tux fit last night. Also that you like to play the field.”
He popped back out of the kitchen, a frown marring his face. “You know that’s not true, don’t you? I’ve never played the field, certainly not right now.”
“I know.” She tugged the blanket tighter around her. “I think it’s because you’re the only single one left except Ezekiel, and he’s boring.”
“That makes sense.” He went back into the kitchen and a minute later, the bubbling sound and smell wafting out of the kitchen told her the coffee would be ready soon. “It’s still not true.”
“Any idea why your brother doesn’t date? He doesn’t even bring a plus one to most events.”
Joss shrugged as he leaned against the opening to the kitchen. “I have no idea. Something changed when he was about sixteen but no one knows what it is. I’m sure my parents do, but not any of the rest of us. Did you ever hear anything in the gossip circles?”
Minnie shook her head. “No. Nothing. It does make for an interesting mystery, but I also wonder what could have happened that would change him as much as I’ve heard reported.”
He blew out a breath. “I wish he’d talk to someone and let us help him, but as far as I know, even Gideon has no idea, and those two were always thick as thieves.” With that he turned to get the coffee effectively ending that part of the conversation.
After a cup of coffee and small talk, Joss checked his watch. “I have less than half an hour before I have to leave. How’re you doing?”
Minnie shrugged. “I’m good. It’s been nice being here and not at my father’s house. I think I’m going to try to learn how to cook, so I can make my own dinners. I never learned how. When my father lost almost everything, he only kept a few people on staff, but a cook was one of them. It was beneath his daughter to darken the door of the kitchen or some nonsense like that.”
He grinned. “Just don’t burn the place down.”
“I’ll try not to.”
“Is there anything else you need?”
Minnie paused. “I don’t think so. I ordered some groceries, so I have food. My clothes were delivered, so I’m good there. I have internet access and devices to access it with. Nearly every show and movie known to man available on demand. What more do I need?”
Joss laughed. “I don’t know, but it does seem like you’re pretty well set.” He pulled his phone out and checked his calendar. “It looks like it’ll probably be Wednesday or even Thursday before I can be back, and then probably not until after the wedding. There’s a lot going on with the wedding next week.”
“I know. I didn’t think you’d be around much this week.”
They talked for a few more minutes, then he stood. “I’ve got to get going. I will tell you to watch for a major announcement on Monday. I think you’ll find it quite fascinating.”
She tilted her head. “What are you talking about? What kind of announcement?”
“I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but I know you’ll be excited.”
