pick it up, answering hastily to get rid of the person who no doubt wants to tell me about the warranty on my ten-year-old car.
“You stupid bitch. Did you really think blocking my number would keep me from finding you?”
I freeze, my eyes finding Rocker. He must sense my discomfort because he crosses the room and pulls the phone from my hand before I can hit the end button.
Chapter 27
Rocker
She turns white as a ghost, and the sight of her upset makes my skin itch to defend her.
I look down at the phone before holding it to my ear. The Vermont area code registers in my head before the piece of shit on the other end begins to speak.
“Did you hear me, whore? I’m fucking coming for you.”
“You have a lot of fucking nerve,” I growl, reaching out a hand and caressing Simone’s bare shoulder.
She must register her nakedness finally because she spins around and rushes to her dresser, grabbing the very first item and getting dressed.
“Who the fuck is this?” the man on the other end hisses. “Has she already moved on from my son? Doesn’t surprise me. She’s a fucking slut after all.”
“Never fucking call this number again.” Threatening an asshole over the phone isn’t the most effective way to get rid of someone, but it’s all I have to work with right now.
“You need to get out while you can, son.” I’m pissed with the way he includes me in the same group as his own psychotic son. “She’s a fucking black widow, and if you’re not careful, you’ll be next.”
“Did you hear me, old man? Stop fucking bothering her.”
Simone doesn’t look surprised to find out that I already knew he was harassing her.
“Don’t worry, my man. I’ve got something planned for that evil bitch. Her chances are up.”
He hangs up the phone, and my heart pounds with his ability to get the last fucking word.
“Are you okay?”
Simone nods, but her whole body is trembling. If I reach out to her right now, I’ll never let go, and the fucker on the phone just gave me a job to do. Calling her to be a dick is one thing. Threatening her safety won’t be tolerated.
“Where are you going?” she cries, reaching for my arm when I turn to walk out of the room.
“Why didn’t you say something about what’s been going on?”
“You checked the voicemail, or Jinx did. Don’t pretend like you didn’t know.” Her eyes drop, her hand following, and I immediately hate that we have no physical contact. “I blocked his number. He’s all the way in Vermont. He can’t hurt me here.”
“This isn’t the 1700s, Simone, where someone has to plan for months to make a damn trek across the country. Jumping on a plane is as easy as driving to the damn grocery store.”
“He’s not coming here,” she mutters, taking a step back to sit on the edge of her bed.
“He just threatened you on the damn phone!” I roar. “I can’t keep you safe if you don’t tell me what’s going on.”
“You fucking left! You walked out and didn’t show your face for the last two weeks,” she cries, tears rolling down her beautiful face.
“What’s going on?” Jinx asks after he shoves the bedroom door open and steps into the room.
He looks ready to murder me without hesitation, and that’s the kind of man he is. He’ll protect his child, still growing in Simone’s stomach before he wastes time on questions.
“That motherfucker is still calling and threatening her,” I explain, my blood boiling, hands trembling with no way to release the anger.
“Still?” Jinx looks from me to Simone. “So, it’s time to do something about it.”
“It’s time,” I agree, and this makes Simone’s head snap up.
“What are you going to do?”
“Take care of it,” Jinx says, the simplicity of his tone fueling my raging fire.
“Rocker?” Simone gasps before I can follow him out of the room.
I can’t explain. I can’t tell her how I plan to go to Vermont and rip that fucker limb from limb. I can’t make her an accomplice in the destruction I want to rain down on the man that’s making her cry.
“It’s going to be fine.” Clasping my hand when I step closer to her, I tell her, “I promise I’ll keep you safe.”
She clings harder to me when I lean over and brush my mouth against hers.
“Promise?” she whispers against my lips.
She calms me. Even with the acrimony coursing through my veins, just one brush of
