Mason Wolfe (Wolfe Brothers #3) - Sandi Lynn Page 0,50
I was inside a burning building. But it was time for me to grow up and make things right between us. I missed her. I missed our relationship, her smile, the sex, and the way she’d steal my potato chips and lie about it after I’d find the empty bag in her room. I was in love with her and it was time I told her. I had realized I could no longer allow my past to control my future.
“Hey, you have a second?” she asked as she emerged from her room.
“Sure. I was just going to ask you the same thing.”
“I just wanted to let you know that I’m moving out, but you don’t have to worry about the rent because I will give you my half up front.”
I swallowed hard as I stood there and listened to her.
“Sara, you don’t have to move out. Where would you go?”
“California. I’m moving to California,” she nervously spoke.
“What? Why?” My brows furrowed and my heart began to race.
“I’m pursuing my dream of becoming a surgeon, and I got offered a trauma fellowship at Cedars Sinai working under Dr. Grace Harper-Finn.”
“What about your mother?” I asked as I stood there in disbelief.
“This is what my mother would have wanted me to do. A couple weeks ago, I visited her, and she told me how proud she was of me for becoming a trauma surgeon. That really hit me hard and I knew I wasn’t living my life to my full potential and she wouldn’t be proud of me for that. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know.”
“When are you moving?”
“I’m leaving tomorrow. I’ll send for my things once I get settled and find a place.”
“Tomorrow? How long have you known about this?”
“A couple days. It all happened so fast.”
“You quit your job?”
“I had no choice. My boss understood. He said it happens, and he wished me luck. Did you need to talk to me about something?”
“Um, actually I forgot what I wanted to ask you.”
“Oh. Okay. If you remember, I’ll be in my room finishing up packing.” She began to walk away.
“Sara?”
“Yeah?” She turned around.
“I’m really happy for you. I know you’ll be a great surgeon.”
“Thanks, Mason.” She gave me a small smile and went to her room.
I felt like I had been ripped apart inside. But most of all, for the first time in my life, I felt my heart break.
Three days later
I had been working the past couple of days and I’d made sure I wasn’t home when she left. Probably a dick move on my part, but I already felt the pain of her leaving, and I couldn’t bear to watch her walk out of the apartment with her luggage. I hadn’t talked to my brothers at all about her moving to California. In fact, I hadn’t talked to anyone in a couple of days except my friends at the station.
“Hello, darling.” My mother smiled when I walked into the kitchen.
“Hey, Mom.” I kissed her cheek.
After I said hi to the entire family, I went into the living room and poured myself a double scotch. This was the last place I wanted to be.
“Hey, bro,” Nathan spoke as he hooked his arm around me. “I have great news.”
“What is it?”
“The townhouse next to me just went up for sale and it’s listed at a bargain price. It’s perfect for you and you can afford it.”
“Why is it listed at a bargain price?”
“Mr. Bentley passed away, god rest his alcoholic soul, and Mrs. Bentley decided the place was too big for just her and her six cats. So, she’s looking to get rid of it quickly and priced it way below market value to get rid of it faster. Now, it needs some work, but what place doesn’t. Anyway, I knew you’d love the idea, so my realtor is calling you tomorrow to set up a tour of the place.”
“Nathan, come on.”
“Come on, what?” Elijah asked as he walked into the room.
“I was just telling Mason here about the townhouse next to me.”
“Great bargain, bro.” He pointed at me. “You’d be stupid not to take it.”
“You two do realize that I am in the middle of a lease, right?”
“No big deal. Sara is still living there. Just give her your half of the rent for the remainder of the lease,” Nathan said.
“She moved out.”
“What?” Elijah asked.
“She got a trauma fellowship at Cedars Sinai in California.”
“Shit. I didn’t see that one coming,” Nathan said.
“When is she leaving for California?” Elijah
