and arched a brow. “Really? Like it wasn’t happening that the Genetics Director was drugging me and stealing samples of my blood for who knows what reason?”

His jaw clenched so hard the skin turned white.

“Either I do something about this or there is going to be an attack on the Association. What do you want me to do? Let people get hurt when they don’t need to?” I asked him softly.

“I don’t want you involved at all,” he grumbled.

“Well too damn bad,” I snapped. I exhaled and fought not to say what I wanted to, which was that I wished he didn’t know. If I hadn’t brought him to T’s place the other day, he wouldn’t have met my parents and wouldn’t have talked afterwards about everything that was going on. T had briefed them all on what was happening.

Now, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen.

“What will you do if I act?” I asked Hurricane quietly. “Either you are with me or you are against me in this case.”

He sat on the couch and put his head in his hands. “Why does it have to be this way?”

“Not everything is black and white and it seems like that’s pretty much my life. You have a chance to walk away.” I whispered that last part.

He dropped his hands, raised his head to meet my eyes and said, “No, I don’t.”

“Yes, you do. This is your last chance. Walk away now, end our relationship, and you won’t have to deal with this stuff anymore,” I told him, trying to sound strong as my heart prepared to be broken yet again.

He stood, walked to me, gripped my arms, and said, “I am not walking away from you. Never again.”

“Then you need to let her do this,” Vortex said. “It’s her family and she wants to end it quietly. Honestly, the Association will probably thank her for it afterwards. If this was made public, it could destroy the balance we have.”

“There might be another way,” he argued. “We just haven’t thought of it yet.”

I smiled and kissed his cheek. “Always the optimist, but sometimes shit is just fucked up.”

He chuckled while shaking his head. “Such a poet.”

“I try,” I said and smiled wide.

He rested his forehead against mine and exhaled loudly.

Someone pounded on my door and we all turned towards it.

Vortex opened it and Galactic Gargoyle, in his stone glory, stared at me. “It’s T. He’s been taken prisoner.”

I blinked at him. “What?”

“Transistor has just been taken prisoner and they have him in the cells downstairs. The Genetic Director asked for a private meeting with him,” he said. “I came to get you as soon as I heard.”

I snagged my pistol from my nightstand and slid it into the holster on my leg.

Hurricane grabbed my arm, stopping me from storming out. “What are you going to do?”

I looked up at him and said, “Save my boyfriend. Kill my grandfather. Try not to hurt anyone else.”

“Let me come with you,” he said and slipped his shoes on.

“You’re not going to stop me,” I warned him.

He smiled. “I know. I hadn’t planned on it. I planned on helping you.”

I nodded once, and we all headed towards the elevators. “How did he get captured?” I asked.

Gargoyle shrugged. “I don’t know. I just saw him being brought in when I landed.”

I bet the jerk was going to try to defeat the Genetics Director by himself. To try to protect me.

“We better hurry,” I said. “I don’t want to think about what will happen if he starts using his powers. Alfred, can you locate him?”

“Sublevel seven,” Alfred said immediately and showed me the red dot on my arm with a map of the building.

“You put a tracker on him?” Vortex asked.

I nodded. “I put one on all of you as a precautionary measure. I knew something like this was going to happen and needed to ensure that I had a way to find you.”

“You did what?” Vortex asked.

I sighed. “Don’t act like you wouldn’t do the same to me if you could.”

“I totally would,” Gargoyle muttered.

The elevator doors opened, and I hurried out. A few heroes milled about, so I did my best to act like I wasn’t having a panic attack, smiling and waving at them.

Hurricane and Vortex got stopped by someone and Hurricane waved at me to keep going.

“Deep breath,” Gargoyle whispered to me. “T’s going to be okay. They can’t kill him.”

“I know,” I muttered. “I know.”

“No, but they can torture him and from
