and held up my hand.

That had cost me a lot of my power, and I was exhausted. I wanted to jump up and run to him, but unlike cheesy romance movies, in reality, people who used powers like that were exhausted afterwards.

Gargoyle dropped to his knees and gently set his stone, clawed hand against my cheek. “Are you okay?”

“Isn’t that my line?” I asked with a smirk. “I’m the one who blew up the building over you. Where did you go?”

“He shot us out of the building about a mile down the river using tubes.”

“Transistor?” I asked.

“Here,” he said and dropped from the sky on my other side.

“Thank goodness,” I exhaled and closed my eyes.

“You impertinent, disobedient, little shit!” The man bellowed.

Gargoyle picked me up and held me in a standing position with his arm around my ribs.

Before me stood the man, half his mask destroyed and his skin burnt.

“I always hated you, but this is the craziest stunt you have ever pulled,” I snapped. “Can’t you be normal for once in my life?”

“Wait, you know him?” Transistor asked.

“Transistor, Gargoyle, please meet my father, The Green Mask,” I said and weakly waved towards him.

Chapter Nineteen

“Your dad is a villain?” Gargoyle asked.

I nodded then looked at my father. “Does Mom have any idea what you’ve been up to?”

“Who do you think created the cyborg creatures?” he asked. “She wanted to just kill you after you turned to the heroes, but I convinced her to wait and let me force you out of the Association first.”

“Not everything is about you!” I yelled. “I never would have given up information about you. They don’t have any clue who you are. I’m registered as an orphan.”

“I won’t take that chance,” Dad growled. “I’ve worked too hard for this.”

“You don’t know what hard work is. You just ride along on Mom’s coattails,” I said.

“Violet, let’s not pick a fight. You are not exactly in fighting shape,” Gargoyle whispered.

“You and me. One-on-one. Let us settle this once and for all, Brown Disaster,” Dad challenged.

“Do not call me that!” I screamed. “You two idiots gave me the worst name ever! I’m glad I ended up being normal or I would have been stuck with that shit storm of a name and I would have hated it.”

“Brown Disaster?” Gargoyle whispered behind me.

“Do you know how long we worked on your name and outfit?” Dad said and acted like he was choked up. “To find out our child was…basic, hurt so much.”

“You’re fucking basic!” I screamed and tried to send a bolt of electricity at him, but it barely singed his shoulder.

He brushed his shoulder off and shook his head. “Such a disappointment. I guess we can start calling you the Brown Disappointment instead.”

“Back up is on the way,” Gargoyle whispered almost too soft for me to hear.

“This is my fight,” I growled. “You two stay out of it.”

Transistor grabbed my arm. “Lucky, you used up all your power. You can’t—”

I interrupted him and shook my arm free of his hold. “Stay out of it.”

“Go, replenish your power,” Dad said and waved at a downed power line. “I won’t let you say you only lost because of being depleted. I will take you on at full strength and whip your ass.”

“Old men like you need to be put in their place,” I snapped.

Dad chuckled. “You get that fire from your mom.”

“Where is Mom?” I asked. “Why isn’t she here studying us and recording the data for her experiments?”

“Oh, she’s got access to my cameras,” Dad said.

Of course, she did.

“Violet—” Gargoyle whispered.

I turned, gave him my brightest smile, and said, “Make sure you take pictures when I win. I want to be able to send them to taunt my parents afterwards.”

“Five minutes,” Transistor said.

Dad removed his gloves, set them on the ground, and then raised his fists in front of him.

Releasing a big breath, I raised my fists and moved forward.

Light on the balls of my feet, I was ready to move quickly to avoid his attacks. Hands up to protect my face. Face set in an unreadable mask so he can’t read my movements.

As expected, he attacked first.

I dodged right, and his fist flew past my left cheek. He swung again, this time an uppercut that caught my forearm.

With his body so close, I was able to punch him in the stomach with an uppercut of my own.

He grunted and darted backwards, putting space between us again.

“You’re faster. And you actually put your body behind your punch. I’m glad
