Lost in the Silence - A.R. Breck Page 0,74

an accent above me. His words make chills break out across every inch of my body.

“No! No, no, no, no, no!” I squeeze Wesley to me and turn my body to shield him away from the large man's hands. I’m not match to him though, and he pulls Wesley out of my arms with ease.

“No!” I wail, trying to get up to chase after him when someone presses me back down against the floor. When the man who had Wesley comes back empty handed, tears spring to my eyes as I think the absolute worst.

“Where’s my baby! Where’s my baby!” I scream at the top of my lungs. “Give me back my fucking baby!”

“I’ve been watching you for a while, you know. Watching you with that pathetic boy. The entire family needs to pay for thinking we’re stupid fucking dogs. Your boy is too much damaged goods for us. We have no use for him. You, on the other hand…” A hand runs through my hair and I fight through a gag as I fight against them. Where’s Wesley? Where the fuck is my baby! “You, on the other hand, would be the perfect recruit. I have the perfect idea on what I’ll do with you.”

It feels like the temperature in the truck drops about fifty degrees. When I finally glance up, I see a group of Hispanic men looking down at me. Their gazes leery and it’s then that I realize what they want from me.

I’m in trouble. Like big, big, fucking trouble.

“No! Please, no. I’ll do anything. Let me go! Give me back my baby! What did you do to him!” I freak out, kicking the door as fast and as hard as I possibly can. When I feel the truck start moving, terror seizes me and I let out the most piercing scream I’ve ever heard.

“WHERE’S MY BABY! WESLEY!” My foot makes contact with the man who brought me in here. I can feel as my shoe makes contact with his cheek. His eyes darken into soulless pools. Even the men that I’m used to don’t look as terrifying as this man.

“Please. Please let me go.”

He brings his hand up to his cheek, feeling what I know will be a bruise. Then he leans up, cocks his fist back, and slams his knuckles into my nose.

Crack.

Everything goes dark.

On the way back home, I feel the most settled as I’ve felt since I moved in. This shit with the Mexican’s has been laying heavily on me. I hate when there’s shit going on with the business that’s unresolved. We finally sat down with Hugo, Colin, and Rich tonight and even went on FaceTime with Lynx and Aziel. We came up with a good plan on how we’re going to deal with the Mexican’s. It won’t be easy, but we have enough allies with us to back us up if need be. We might have to give a little, but we’re not going to fold like they wanted.

We don’t fucking fold.

“All right, man. I’ll hit you up tomorrow. Rose wants me to help her pack.” Easton rolls his eyes.

I chuckle. “Now you know how I felt.”

“Yeah, I’ll just be glad when this shit is over. Cara got Rose in on this moving kick and she’s been a fucking nutcase ever since.” He shakes his head. “Woman makes me crazy.”

I feel that.

We pull onto the gravel road that leads to the house. I can see the lights on up ahead, which means Cara’s up waiting for me.

I smile.

Easton parks, hopping out to grab my chair. Once he sets it in front of me, I slide into my seat and make my way towards the house.

“Thanks man, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” I frown, hearing a noise. “What is that?”

Easton turns around. “What’s what?”

My eyes widen, and I look for the source of the cries. When I see the stroller, I press the forward button as hard as I can, wishing that this thing could go any fucking faster.

I hear Easton’s footsteps rush behind me, and I know he can hear the cries too.

When I get to the stroller, I lean forward, seeing Wesley halfway sliding out of the bottom. His face is beet red from his cries, his face wet with actual tears. Fear whooshes into my as I look around. Easton grabs Wesley as quickly as he can.

“Cara!” I shout. “Fuck, Cara!” Terror eats me, and it feels like dread weighs me down. I can barely move my head
