I Regret Nothing - JB Trepagnier Page 0,36

nice to me. He promised he wouldn’t kill me and said no one else was allowed to either.”

“That’s the kind of fucked up games he likes to play,” Dakarys said.

“No. He swore on his wolf. My mentor was one. Wolves don’t make that oath unless it’s serious, and they don’t intend to break it.”

“Faust isn’t a normal wolf,” Rajack pointed out.

“I believed him. How sure are you he’s killing inmates?”

I believed it at first because Faust was acting like a psycho from the moment we met. He was different in his office. He still gave off some weird vibes, but if he left behind a body count here, wouldn’t he be serving a sentence right along with us?

“No one has any proof, but everyone here is scared of him and said a lot more inmates ended up dead after he got hired. Every single guard here is awful. Some are incompetent, and some are corrupt. We know why people end up getting shanked in here. They made enemies, and the incompetent guards looked the other way. But sometimes, inmates die here that no one had a problem with. No one could explain it, and no one claimed credit. Those started after Faust got hired.”

“But if all the guards here are bad, how do you know for sure it’s him?”

Why was I even trying to defend him? I was never the kind of girl that a few smiles and brief kindness had me defending an asshole. If I was dating someone and they proved to be a dick, I noped right out of that relationship so fast. There was just something about Faust in his office today that made me think Faust was a lot deeper than anyone in here gave him credit for. I knew he was dangerous. I wasn’t too fucked up enough about this not to realize that. Please don’t ask me why I was trying to figure that wolf out or his significant mood changes.

“There’s not much to do in prison except watch your surroundings and figure out how to break the rules. People watch Faust. He’s good at his job. He’s probably the only guard in here who isn’t totally inept at it. He’s also the only guard who won’t look the other way about anything. He can’t be bribed. Someone tested those waters and got sent to solitary. It’s fucking weird. You don’t sign up to be a guard here unless you’re fucked in the head. No one can figure out exactly how fucked Faust is, and he makes everyone uncomfortable,” Dakarys said.

I held up my hand.

“Wait, a minute. Everyone thinks Faust is a serial killer because he’s good at his job?”

“Don’t forget the dead bodies,” Rajack said. “The other guards here are ignorant. They’d leave evidence. Trust me, if there were a revenge killing in here, it would set off this entire chain of events. A shifter would kill a Vampire, and then the Vampires would retaliate. It’s the same for every gang in here. A lot of the unexplained deaths were people who kept their noses clean here. They were dangerous criminals, but they hadn’t pissed anyone off. The only time someone dies here that didn’t piss someone off is if you end up here for fucking around with kids, and whoever did it will brag about it.”

“Yeah, but there are serial killers in here. One of them could easily be knocking off inmates instead of Faust.”

They both just shrugged like I totally wasn’t understanding this. I guess I didn’t. Faust could be creepy. Sometimes, he had this look in his eyes where I totally could peg him for being a prison serial killer. There was just something about his smile that told me there was a different side to this story.

“Whoever is doing it has access to the entire prison. You know, like a guard? Enough about Faust. You can’t trust him. Let’s get our trays put away and sneak off to the mailroom.”

Yes, enough about the wolf. I was going to give myself a migraine trying to figure out his mood swings. It was time to figure out exactly what I needed to steal for us to break out of here.

We gathered around a table in the mailroom, and I waited to hear what this big plan was.

“Okay, Rei. If you think this is too dangerous, tell us now. We need you to steal a guard’s keys, but it can’t be Faust. We already have a guard picked who won’t report
