to bed right now and claim her as I did that first night.
“I have to keep my itinerary under lock and key because the board isn’t happy with the decisions I make when I’m on vacation,” I say.
I can feel her eyes on me as I make my way to the mini bar. I pull out some sparkling water and drink.
“What does that mean? Does it have to do with your taste for extreme sports?” she asks, grinning.
“So you’ve heard about that too?”
“Well…Blaire…” she says and looks away. Neither of us wants to talk about Blaire right now. “The people in the cafeteria seem to know about everything that goes on in your life.”
I nod. She follows me over to the lounge area, runs her fingers over a crystal vase that’s filled with orchids.
“Yeah, I’m not surprised.”
“Why do they have a problem with what you do on your own time? Can they even stop you from doing it?” she asks.
I look at her. Again, Kim doesn’t fail to surprise me.
“Exactly my point. They seem to think I’m putting my life in direct danger and they can’t risk it. I’m a liability. My lawyers seem to think there’s very little I can do about it without breaking my contract and causing a legal mess.”
Kim’s brows furrow.
“Okay, so what are we doing here this weekend? Why have you kept your itinerary sealed up? Are you planning something that will cause a legal mess?” she asks.
I take a long sip of my water and present her with a smile.
“It’s a surprise,” I say, and instead of being wary, Kim smiles too.
As a rule, I don’t take any of my dates or girlfriends on my adventures. I’ve always assumed, and correctly so, that they would have no interest.
I’m not sure what made me plan this trip with Kim, or to include her in what I have planned for today. Maybe because I know time is of the essence for us. I’m not sure what the future has in store for us and I want to make the most of the time we do have together.
Then I see Kim’s eyes light up when she sees the aerobatic plane parked in front of us. She turns to me with a big childlike grin on her face and points behind her.
“Can I fly it?” she asks with a chuckle, and I pull her into my arms to kiss her cheek.
“I don’t think so, unless you are certified to do so.”
“So you get to have all the fun?” she complains, and we walk over to it, holding hands.
I have two assistants who help us gear up for the flight. Kim seems excited about the whole thing. This feels like the right decision. I didn’t think I would ever meet someone who would be this thrilled about every aspect of my interests.
I help her in and get her strapped up in the seat behind mine.
“Oh, my God! This is definitely the most exciting thing I have ever done!” she exclaims as I take position in front of her.
It’s a small aircraft, and I have trained for using it over several months. I would, of course, never put Kim’s life in danger, and I’m fully confident in my abilities. Nonetheless, I turn to her before take-off to make sure she is still okay with this.
“You don’t have to do this, Kim. You can back out now if you want to.”
“And just stay back while you have all the fun?”
“Are you sure you’re not scared? Things can get dangerous and unpredictable up there,” I add.
She rolls her eyes.
“Thank you for the warning, Kirk, but I think I can manage. I can’t promise I won’t scream and screech in your ears, but I still want to do this.”
I turn back around and put on my helmet. I have never experienced this with someone else. I feel a new kind of thrill as I prepare to take off. There are a few new stunts and maneuvers I want to try out that I’ve been practicing for. I hope she will enjoy it, and I can’t believe how excited I am to share this experience with her.
I hold up my hand and she gives me a high-five, and then we’re off. Kim squeals with joy behind me, and I join her in the exultations. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I have nothing to worry about. Not a care in the world.
