comfortable if Calvin walked in on us instead.

Erica’s eyes blaze as she looks at me and then Trevor, and back at me again. She looks like she’s ready to chew us alive.

“I have a few things for you to sign, Mr. Davenport,” she says, clutching a collection of files to her stomach. Her voice is high-pitched and accusatory.

She did this on purpose. She wanted to catch us together. Had she even knocked?

I’m beginning to get the feeling that Erica doesn’t like the idea of her boss and me together.

Trevor steps away from me, and I look at him. He actually looks a little bit mad.

“You can leave the files on my desk, Erica,” he says, in a low, gruff voice.

Erica’s nostrils flare, and she struts over to the desk and places the files down. When she turns to us, she parts her mouth like she’s about to say something. What could she possibly have to say?

Is she going to admonish us like an angry and protective parent of a teenager? Does she even recognize the fact that she’s younger than us, and also Trevor’s assistant? We both outrank her.

“I assumed you would have known better than to just waltz into my office,” Trevor says. I’m not sure if he meant to interrupt her, but he does. She clamps her mouth shut, and I notice the way her cheeks flush.

“And you can’t fool me into thinking I don’t know that those files can wait. You know I am meeting with Ms. Crawford. What made you think you could just walk in here unannounced?”

I wish Trevor would go a little easy on her. I can see the way her expression is oscillating between being embarrassed and angry.

“It’s fine; I was just leaving,” I say, throwing Trevor a forced icy smile.

“Neither of you are going anywhere until I say so.” He is barking now, and I can see Erica curling into herself. Maybe she regrets her actions now, but it’s too late. Trevor is not exactly the most forgiving person.

I turn to him with my hands on my hips. He can talk to his assistant like that if he wants, but he’s not getting away by talking to me this way.

“I am going to walk out of your office now, and I would like to see you try to stop me.”

He glares at me, and his eyes fly over my body. I can see I’ve gotten under his skin. He’s mad at me for my over-confidence but attracted to it at the same time.

“I hope you both have a lovely day,” I say and smile at Erica as I walk out of the office.

I shut the door behind me. My heels are clicking on the marble floor as I walk away, headed to the elevator with a thumping heart.

We would have kissed. I would have been dragged down that rabbit hole if Erica hadn’t interrupted us once again.

Trevor seems to think that last night wasn’t the last time. What are we going to do about it? What are we going to do about Anya?

I feel my hand shaking a little as I press the button to take me to my floor. Trevor is the only man who makes me jittery like this, and that can’t be a good thing.

Blaire has left the room, so it’s just Erica and me here. She hasn’t made a move to leave yet. Maybe she can feel the red-hot rage emanating from me. I was so close. So close to having Blaire again!

This is the second time this has happened, and I don’t feel it is excusable behavior. Especially since Blaire is sure Erica knows.

I walk back to my desk, and Erica licks her lips nervously.

“I apologize, Mr. Davenport. I should have knocked,” she says in a quiet voice.

“Yes, you should have. I’m pretty sure you didn’t just forget to knock.”

“I was in a rush and wasn’t thinking,” she counters.

I sit down in my chair and smooth my tie. I’m glaring at her, and somehow, she’s plucked the courage to stare right back.

“Is there something you would like to say to me, Erica? I am all ears.”

There is silence in the room. She is trying to assess the situation, trying to figure out how much she can actually say.

I clench my jaw tightly, and she shakes her head.

“No, Mr. Davenport, there isn’t anything.”

“It seems to me like there is something on your mind. This is your chance to get it all out, Erica. A chance like this may
