anxious when I speak to her. I know she knows. She knows I know too. My cheeks flush in embarrassment.
“Mr. Davenport would like to see you in his office in five minutes,” she says, and before I can add anything, she has ended the call. I don’t know what he wants to see me about, but I’m a little excited to go.
More importantly, I don’t know why Erica suddenly has an attitude. I understand that she now has the burden of harboring his secret, but it almost sounds like she is mad at me for it. Have I personally offended her in some way?
I touch up my makeup at my desk before I go. I know he told Erica he wants to see me in five minutes, but he can wait. After all, he is interrupting my lunch.
I walk by Erica’s desk and she barely even looks at me. I knock before I walk into Trevor’s office. He is on the phone with someone but ends the call quickly.
“Are you going to apologize to me for being late?” he asks.
Okay, so he has reverted to his usual self. Good to know somethings don’t change, no matter what happened last night in the privacy of his bedroom.
“No, I don’t think I need to apologize to you. You interrupted my lunch with this surprise meeting and I have no idea what this is about. I’m not exactly available to you at your every beck and call. I have a company to run.”
Trevor is glaring at me while I speak. It seems like he doesn’t like what he’s hearing. How do I always manage to piss him off? Or is he just easily piss-off-able?
He clears his throat and stands up, buttoning his jacket smoothly in the process.
“That was not the impression you gave me last night, Ms. Crawford. You came when I wanted you to come.” His eyes have warmed. Even though his voice is firm and calm, I can see the way his expression has changed.
I feel goosebumps on my skin. I know he’s making that reference on purpose. Just to throw me off.
I hold my head up high.
“I thought we were going to maintain a professional relationship in this office and leave our personal life outside,” I reply.
He’s coming towards me, and I wish he wouldn’t. I wish he would keep his distance from me so I can keep my wits about me.
“You and I both know that we are way past that by now, Blaire. I don’t want to put on a show and pretend like you don’t get me going from the moment you walk into a room. Last night was incredible.”
I make a sorry attempt at still trying to keep up the façade.
“Is this why you asked me to your office?”
“You really should take a compliment when it’s being offered to you on a silver platter.”
“I didn’t think you would have a single nice thing to say about me,” I say.
Trevor draws even closer, and I can feel my throat constricting. Every muscle in my body is now tense, and I’m on high alert.
“Well, I definitely have a lot of nice thoughts about you even if I don’t say them out loud.”
He is right in front of me now. I can’t help but stare at the way his wide shoulders rise and fall before me. I clung to those shoulders last night! He’s right; it was incredible. I part my lips slightly, and he reaches for my face, hooking a long finger under my chin to tip my face up towards him.
I don’t know what he’s going to do next but I really hope he doesn’t kiss me. I’ll crumble into a million pieces if he does. I have now been proven to have no self-control around him.
“Trevor, last night was a one-time thing, right? We are both in agreement about this?”
His eyes are all over me. Examining my mouth, my neck, my breasts as my chest heaves. I’m already changing my mind. I want him to kiss me. Take me.
“Do you want to sign another contract?” he asks, and the corners of his mouth tighten like he’s about to smile.
I’m about to tell him to shut up and not make jokes about such a serious matter, but the office door bursts open. Did someone knock? We both clearly missed the knock if there was one.
I jump away from him and turn to see Erica standing there.
