His Apprehensive Mate - Brea Alepou Page 0,55
him. It wasn’t his—it was Morgan’s.
“We need to leave now,” Kenny growled.
Dezi stared into his eyes and gave an affirmative nod. Kenny wanted to thank him, but he was too busy heading outside for the cars.
“Ride with me. You aren’t in the right state of mind to drive,” Logan said.
Kenny didn’t have the energy to argue. He yanked the car door open and got in. He slammed the door so hard the car rocked a little. Logan opened his mouth but quickly closed it. One look at Kenny’s face made him think better of it.
The back door of the car opened, and Indigo got in.
“You couldn’t ride with anyone else?” Logan asked. He white-knuckled the steering wheel.
Indigo sighed. “I—”
Kenny growled. “I don’t know what’s going on between you two, but it’s going to have to wait till after I have my mate and kid back home safe. So for now, let’s focus.”
“Fine by me,” Logan said.
Indigo grumbled in the back, but he said nothing further. The drive was long, and the more time passed, the more anxious Kenny felt, and it was getting harder and harder to tell the difference between his own fear and the fear and pain from Morgan.
“You’re going to put a hole in the car with how hard you’re tapping your foot,” Logan said.
“Logan, now isn’t a good time,” Kenny said through gritted teeth.
“I know, but at least this gives you something to think about till we get there.”
Kenny placed his hand on his leg, forcibly stopping himself from tapping it.
“I don’t understand how this happened,” Kenny forced out.
Logan sighed. “We’ll know once we have them both back at home.”
He sounded so sure that Kenny wanted to believe it to be true. No, he’d make sure it came true.
They pulled to the side, just outside of Vast Pack territory. Even the air smelled of wolf.
“How many wolves are we up against exactly?” Logan asked.
“Roughly a hundred or so wolves,” Gev said, jogging over to them.
“Going in shifted already is going to be our best bet,” Idish said. He’d come from the Blaze Pack. Yovan had kept her word and then some; after the Vast Pack attacked her territory, she’d sent even more wolves with them. Not enough to equal a hundred, but there were at least twenty wolves.
“We secure Morgan and Ava first,” Dezi said. “If you find them, you protect them.” He showed everyone the picture of Morgan and Ava.
Kenny was already stripping out of his clothes; Morgan was close, he could feel it. He’d find him. Dezi and Rhy came over to him.
“We’ve got your back.”
Kenny nodded before he let the shift take over him. He didn’t care if humans were nearby; he wasn’t willing to wait till they got behind a tree line. He shook himself and looked up to Dezi, but his friend didn’t force him to shift back.
“As soon as we pass the trees, start shifting. I’ve got a feeling he already knows we’re here,” Dezi said.
Hodge moved to the front, and they moved toward the tree line. One sniff and Kenny agreed with Dezi’s statement—they were lying in wait. He got low to the ground and hissed.
“Shift now,” Dezi shouted.
The first round of wolves started to attack. Kenny tackled the wolf that tried to go after Dezi. He held nothing back and ripped his throat out instantly. He didn’t pause in his kill; he jumped and climbed a tree with ease. He attacked the next wolf, landing on its back and driving it down to the ground. There was a whine as Kenny sunk his claws in his back, but he cut it short as he clamped down hard on the wolf’s neck and yanked back. A sickening wet sound echoed in his ears.
He was up and moving while the others engaged in fights of their own. Blood dripped from his mouth, fur was stuck in between his teeth—none of it mattered. He caught Dezi’s eye as Dezi killed the wolf he was fighting. He nodded his large head before shaking out his mane.
Kenny moved toward the direction he just knew Morgan was in. He killed four more wolves on the way. He may have sustained a few injuries along the way but nothing that hindered him. His white fur was drenched a dark crimson color. He stopped short just as he was about to break past the tree line. There was a shed-like house, and everything in Kenny said Morgan would be right behind that door.
But there were at
