His Apprehensive Mate - Brea Alepou Page 0,27

ready to argue, but Gev spoke up before his alpha could.

“Our alpha has a personal issue with the alpha mate.”

“That has nothing to do with me,” Kenny offered.

“Why do you wish to fight the alpha? I doubt you want to lead a pack of wolf shifters,” Yovan asked.

“He hurt what’s mine.”

Yovan’s eyes went big, but understanding showed clearly in her brown eyes. “Very well. Then we are in agreement?”

Dezi shook her hand along with Hodge and Rudd.

“I will send Gev and three of my trusted wolves with you. Lyndon Vast currently has wolves visiting packs, tracking someone down.” Her eyes traveled to Kenny once more, but she didn’t ask about Morgan. “I will keep them from coming to you. It’s better if it’s on middle ground.”

Dezi nodded. “I agree. We have children, and I’d prefer to keep them out of harm’s way.”

Hodge tugged at his beard. “Lead them here.”

Yovan glanced around. “It’s open land far enough from the road that any unsuspecting human wouldn’t know what to make of it. This will have to be done right. Lyndon is a piece of shit, but he isn’t stupid.”

A knot of unease untangled a little in Kenny’s chest. It wouldn’t unfurl completely until the man who’d hurt his mate was dead.

Morgan sighed as he watched Ava play a video game that had a surprising amount of crashing in it. Kenny had been gone for thirty minutes, and already Morgan was missing him. He wondered if the ache was easier to deal with once fully mated?

“Why aren’t you playing? Afraid you’d get your butt kicked?” Dillan asked.

Morgan laughed. “I tried and that’s exactly what happened. I crashed on the easy course.”

Bubbly laughter came from Dillan. It was infectious, making Morgan join in.

“Yeah, it took me a few tries to get it, but Ava is a pro.”

“I don’t have the coordination for it. I’m fine just watching her play,” Morgan said.

“She’s really good. It’s scary,” Dillan said.

He sat down, his head tilted to the side, watching Morgan with an intense look. It was unlike Dillan. Before Morgan could ask what was wrong, Dillan spoke.

“He’ll be back before you know it.”

Morgan sighed, pulling his legs up on the couch and crunching them closer to his body.

“Was it that obvious?”

Dillan shrugged. “I think we all miss our mates when they aren’t next to us.” A smile curved his lips, his light brown skin practically glowing. “But through the bond, I can feel Rhy and it helps me. I know he’s okay.”

Morgan wished he had that with Kenny. What he would give to feel a reassuring presence within himself that was his mate.

“What are you two moping about?” Logan asked.

“I’m not moping,” Dillan said.

Logan pointed at Morgan. “Hmm, but he is.”

Morgan sunk further down into the couch, but it was hopeless as Dillan pulled on his arm.

“Come on.”

“Wh—ere are we going?”

“Ava, we’ll be in the kitchen if you need anything,” Logan shouted out.

Ava pulled her headphones back, glancing over her shoulder at them, a look of utter concentration on her face. Her dark brown eyes went to every face before they landed on Morgan.

“Can I have cookies later?”

“I swear everyone in this house has a sweet tooth,” Logan muttered.

Morgan muffled his laugh. It just meant fewer cookies for Logan. All eyes went to Morgan.

“That’s fine.”

She smiled at them before turning back to her game.

“Just promise away all the cookies, why don’t you,” Logan pouted.

They made their way to the kitchen. No surprise that Kash was already in there baking.

“You’re supposed to be resting. It’s way too close to your due date for you to be moving around this much,” Logan griped.

Kash wiped the sweat from his forehead with a paper towel. He leaned heavily against the counter, rubbing his belly.

“I’m nervous. I bake when I’m nervous,” Kash said.

“Yeah, well, I’m going to need you to sit— Wait.” Logan sniffed the air loudly. “Are you making brownies?”

Morgan licked his lips at the thought of warm chocolatey brownies.

Kash smirked at Logan. “Still want me to sit down?”

Logan muttered under his breath, but Dillan caught whatever he said.

“After the brownies come out.”

The room erupted in laughter.

“How are you feeling, Morgan?” Kash asked

“I feel like I should be asking you that.”

Kash brushed it off. “I’m pregnant, my feet are swollen, the twins double-team my bladder, and my stomach itches.” Kash rubbed his belly. “That pretty much covers it.”

Morgan couldn’t help but stare at Kash’s belly. One day he would carry Kenny’s children. If he lived long enough.

“I don’t know what
