Her Unexpected Admirer Page 0,50
supporting her, this man on the phone was backstabbing his own daughter.
“Okay, thank you for the information. I appreciate the call. It makes a lot of things clearer now.” And with that, he snapped the end button on the phone, disconnecting her father in midsentence.
Kate was standing frozen in the middle of the large office, staring at the phone as if it were a serpent.
“The papers in your arms, are they the reports that show who has been stealing from me?”
Kate looked up at him, fighting back the tears. “Yes,” she said, nodding her head for emphasis.
“And I’m guessing you found the evidence and sent it to your father.”
He wasn’t asking, which made his words so much more wonderful. “Yes,” she said, not wanting him to think anything else.
“Would you like to show me what you’ve found?” he asked gently, knowing that she was probably hurting inside. More than he could understand.
She shook her head, still fighting back the tears. She turned, about to leave his office. She didn’t want to be here, not here where her father had so completely betrayed her. “Kate, don’t leave. I know you found the evidence. I know that your father is an ass. And I’m so sorry that you’ve had to deal with him for so long. But don’t let him win.”
She stopped, her shoulders tense. “He wasn’t like this before my mother died,” she whispered.
He didn’t give a damn what her father was like over a decade ago. He was hurting Kate now and that was what mattered. “You are a strong, intelligent, vibrant woman who deserves much better than what he’s done to you.”
She spun around, her eyes wide and hopeful. “I can’t believe he called you when he’d just told me, not five minutes ago, that I was wrong and should start digging some more.”
“I believe you.”
Kate gasped, thinking that those were the most beautiful words she’d ever heard. With a flick of her wrist, she slammed the door shut behind her. She didn’t even bother to lock it as she dropped her tote on the floor. The papers in her arms followed but she didn’t see any of them as they scattered across the floor. All she wanted was to be in his arms, to experience the beauty of his touch and the magic of his arms. When she came around to the other side of the desk, she threw herself into his arms. She was finished trying to hide the need she felt for Davis. Her father had strict rules about how she should behave, the time during the day in which she should dedicate herself to the job, even the career in which she’d chosen. But her father had proven himself wrong. So wrong! His betrayal allowed her to throw off everything else he’d told her, all the rules he’d demanded that she follow. Tossing off his strictures was the most liberating thing she’d ever done in her life.
Davis pulled back only slightly, looking down at her pink cheeks. “Are you okay?” he asked.
Kate laughed, delighted with her newfound freedom, and pulled clumsily at his tie. “Shut up,” she said as her freedom swept over her and lifted up on her toes, kissing him like she’d never kissed him or another human being before. She loved the way he kissed, the way he touched her. And as soon as she showed him what she wanted, he turned the tables, becoming the aggressor in this passionate dance. He spun her around, lifting her up onto the desk behind her and pushed her back so he could look at her. What he saw in her eyes set him on fire and he pushed her skirt up to her hips. “You’ve made me wait long enough, Kate. No more!” And he was kissing her again, his hands quickly divesting her of her clothes. Kate was just as impatient and, just like that night in Denver, her fingers were too clumsy to deal with the buttons and she simply ripped open his shirt. When her hands discovered the hot skin underneath, she almost laughed with delight.
She wasn’t aware of Davis pushing her jacket off of her shoulders. Her shirt coming off gave her only momentary pause. But when his fingers adeptly released the clasp on her bra, freeing her breasts to his hungry gaze, she sighed with relief and release. “Don’t stop,” she begged him when her mouth found the middle of his chest. She’d been dreaming about doing this for
