her nearness.

I was not planning on getting lost in her endlessly dark eyes.

I definitely didn’t account for the fact that she felt both comfortably familiar and achingly new and unknown at the same time.

Holding her close sent a barrage of sensations shooting through me. All of them moved so quickly, I couldn’t latch onto a single one to figure out how I really felt about all of me touching all of her.

“I was running late too. You surprised me.” Which was not in the plan. I was supposed to surprise her. I was supposed to be shocking her with callousness and cruelty.

Instead, she took my breath away.

Literally.

Before I could get my hands somewhere safe and offer to help her up off the floor, she shifted just enough so our lips were aligned. For a split second, I thought maybe she was just playing with me to get me back for the stunt with the apple, that she was just teasing and trying to get a reaction out of me.

I wasn’t ready for the soft brush of her mouth against mine. I didn’t stand a chance against the whisper of a kiss, and how sweet she tasted as our lips slid together, almost as if they were made to fit against one another.

I liked kissing pretty girls as much as the next guy.

I enjoyed their reactions, knowing I was the one making them sigh and shake in pleasure. I got off on knowing a kiss was just the start, and that things tended to heat up rapidly the moment our lips parted. A good kiss was like pretty scenery on the way to the final destination. An enjoyable part of the journey, but kind of forgettable once you got wherever it was you were going.

This kiss wasn’t like that at all. This kiss was the start and end. This kiss was where I wanted to be. It was the start and the finish. There was no blurry view passing by in a rush. Everything was crystal clear, and I knew every moment would be burned into my memory for eternity.

The way her mouth moved on mine. The way her hands shook against my face as her fingers timidly traced the line of my jaw. The way the tip of her tongue flicked against the tightly sealed seam of my lips until I let her in. I didn’t mean to relent, but there really was no choice. In all the years I’d known her, I never imagined what it would be like to kiss her. Now that we were older, and there was so much hurt and history between us, I couldn’t fathom that anything like this between us would feel so… special. So significant.

I was supposed to be an iceberg these days. She reminded me of the times when I was full of fire.

She murmured a sound of surprise against my mouth as our tongues twisted together. I forgot all about being sprawled on the floor in the living room and fell into all of her softness and warmth. I wasn’t one who lost his head in the heat of the moment, but if anyone asked me my own name right now, I wouldn’t be able to answer. I forgot about everything—everything but the way she squirmed sexily and deepened the kiss, asking for more, wordlessly, as my hand landed on the rounded curve of her backside. I wanted more than anything to have the annoying barrier of clothing out of the way. I wanted to know if her skin was as soft and supple as I thought it would be. I wanted to see if she had freckles in other places aside from the bridge of her nose and if she blushed a pretty pink all over when she was turned on.

Never in a million years did I think I would have such graphic, dirty thoughts about my childhood friend. I’d always wanted to protect her in the past. Now, I wanted to fuck her. But for the immediate future, I would take kissing her as my heart pounded so fast I was worried it might burst.

Her teeth dragged along my bottom lip, and this time when her leg moved between my legs, it felt much more deliberate and provocative. She was not nearly as fumbling and innocent as I thought she was before this kiss.

The palm of her other hand rested on my chest right above my heart. I wondered if she could feel my confusion and excitement through
