The Deputy and His Enforcer (Kincaid Pack #3) - Kiki Clark Page 0,50
all of them. And I know those witches, and none of them are strong enough individually to do this kind of magic.”
“Could you?” he asked, more curious than anything else as his mind turned over possibilities of who Kincaid could be working with or if it was possible there was another enemy, unconnected to the Council, hiding in the shadows.
Hesitating a moment, she finally nodded. “Probably. I’d have to tap into my connection to Rick and the pack though. I have access to a pack that is extremely powerful and whose bonds are strong—the potential magic in that is pretty much limitless. Though,” she added, laughing humorlessly, “tapping into too much would probably kill me.”
He reared back. “Well, let’s not test that theory.”
Her dark brown eyes met his, her face serious and nearly serene. “I have no plans to sacrifice myself, but like you, I would do anything to protect this pack. They are my family, and no one gets away with hurting them.”
Chapter Thirteen
Okay, he understood why they called it the manor now.
Robson had parked his dad’s old Camry off to the side by the detached garage and stood in front of the enormous house, hands on his hips, as he studied it. He didn’t understand why he’d never seen the place before—sure, it was back from the road, but he’d never even noticed the driveway before. And he’d driven down the road a dozen times at least when he’d been following Marcus or one of the others, trying to figure out where they were always headed.
Now he knew. They were coming to this mansion in the middle of nowhere.
That was apparently protected from snoopy humans by magic.
This pack shit was weird as hell.
The front door opened and a cute blonde with messy curls stuck her head out and grinned at him. “You planning on coming inside, Deputy?”
He tipped his head back as he studied the upper floor of the place, catching sight of a little face in a window before they disappeared and the curtain fluttered back into place. He vaguely remembered Marcus mentioning Kai had younger siblings, but he hadn’t caught their ages.
“Deputy? Alpha Kincaid doesn’t like to be kept waiting.” She was still smiling, but there was a slight edge to her tone, letting him know she was serious.
Grunting, he headed up the steps, moving past her and into a large entryway. There was a grand staircase just ahead, some seating over to the side, a few doors, and a couple of hallways heading farther into the house. There was what looked like a hostess stand from a restaurant immediately to his right, and he watched as the blonde tapped on a tablet then placed it on the stand. Looking around once more, he caught sight of Kincaid’s assistant disappearing down a hallway to the right. Robson hadn’t even heard him.
“This place is…” He didn’t even know how to describe it. Compared to the old farmhouse he’d grown up in—with too many people and not enough bedrooms—it seemed excessive.
“I know,” she said softly, closing the door behind him and then nudging him gently with her elbow. “It took me a little while to get used to this place. Don’t think of it as Alpha Kincaid’s house, think of it as the pack’s headquarters.”
When he glanced at her, she was smiling and her eyebrows were arched like she was making a joke that he didn’t get. “Um, okay. Thanks.”
She snorted and led the way toward the left and down one of the hallways. Stopping at a partially closed door, she knocked and waited for a deep voice to tell her to enter. She pushed the door open and stepped back so he could walk inside, giving him a clap on the shoulder before heading back toward the front door.
Stepping into the room, he was surprised by how large it seemed with only two people inside. There was a large table on one side and a gathering of seating on the other. Rick Kincaid was sitting in a large chair by the empty fireplace, the small, dark-haired man that Robson remembered from Teresa’s house on his lap.
“Um, should I step back out?”
Rick raised a single brow and ran one of his hands down the leg of the man who had to be his mate, Kai. Hip to knee, he caressed his… mate, never taking his eyes off Robson.
Kai’s face got a little pink, and he whispered something to Rick that made him smirk, the tip of his fangs
