The Deputy and His Enforcer (Kincaid Pack #3) - Kiki Clark Page 0,44
at his rapid-fire questions, but Patrick settled down quickly and said, “Maybe in a small pack everyone would know everyone and everything, but the Kincaid Pack is huge. Hundreds of members spread across a really big territory. Some of us live in town, but a lot live in the surrounding area so they aren’t so close to humans and can shift more freely. The Enforcers are there if you need them, but it isn’t like most pack members are friends with them. They’re too busy taking care of the pack.”
Robson gaped at him. “Hundreds?”
Reesa nodded eagerly. “Yeah, it’s like this whole separate town within the town. Or really, right next to, like a parallel universe.”
Robson thought back to Marcus’s cousin at the diner Robson had gone to his whole life. “How many businesses are owned by pack members?”
“At least half of the ones in town are either owned by the pack and run by chosen members or are privately owned by pack members. Plus, the factory west of town?” Patrick was grinning again.
“Yeah?” Robson had a feeling he knew where this was going. The factory had been built a few years ago while he was still enlisted, but he’d heard about it. The place employed a few hundred people and had been big news for the area.
Patrick’s grin widened. “Pack owned. There were so many new shifters moving to the area to join the pack that Rick was worried about employment for everyone. I mean, if you need anything, the pack will help provide it, but being part of a pack means giving back and taking care of each other, so people want to work.”
Robson hummed his response as his mind chewed over that information, an idea starting to form in the back of his mind. “What about the classes?”
“Oh, that’s easy. Shifters don’t know shit about their own history most of the time,” Reesa said, laughing at the sputtering of her husband. “And a lot of them get surprised by… sex things.”
Robson made a grossed-out face, and then her words registered. “Wait, what? What do you mean?”
Patrick’s face was beet red. “Oh my god, Teresa.”
She giggled and pressed a kiss to one of his flushed cheeks. “You should just come to the sexual education class this week. That was the most asked about topic, Marcus said, so they moved it up the list and are going to cover it sooner than they’d planned.”
The idea of sweet, awkward Marcus leading a discussion about shifters having sex both amused and aroused Robson. His dick was so confused by the man. “Marcus Rivera is going to talk to a room full of people about sex?”
Patrick laughed, face finally losing some of its color. “Well, no. I think Nico and Bennett are leading the discussion. Nico’s a wolf and Bennett a tiger. Since the majority of the pack are canines or felines, the two of them would cover most everyone.”
“Jamie’s a bird, right? Will he be part of it, you think, or are there not enough bird shifters in the pack?” Robson was definitely going if the class was open to non-shifters.
Reesa shrugged. “He might. Though he doesn’t seem the type to talk about sex and sex organs either.”
Sex organs. “Good lord, Reesa,” he muttered, then refocused on Maria as she began to fuss in his arms. “Uh-oh, someone else was disturbed by her mom’s choice in words.”
Reesa chuckled as she stood carefully, Patrick’s hands on her hips supporting her, and came over to take Maria from him. “I’m going to feed her and lie down.”
“Okay,” he said, standing and giving her a gentle hug. “Motherhood looks good on you, mami.”
“Shut up, I look like hell,” she said, kissing his cheek and smiling.
“You do not,” Patrick growled.
“Your vision is obviously clouded by mating endorphins or whatever, but that’s okay. I’ll take it.” She shot Patrick a sweet look, then disappeared up the stairs.
Robson resettled on the couch, glancing at his phone to check the time. He still had about forty-five minutes before he was expected at the manor. Turning back to Patrick, he was surprised by the unfocused look in his eyes and was confused about why his head was tilted at a weird angle.
“What are you doing?”
“Listening to Teresa to make sure she made it upstairs okay,” Patrick muttered. A few seconds later, he refocused on Robson with a small smile. “She told me to stop listening to her, that she was fine.”
“Could she hear you?” Had her senses changed after… mating
