The Deputy and His Enforcer (Kincaid Pack #3) - Kiki Clark Page 0,43
is that weird? But your husband smelling you as he carries you around is perfectly fine?”
Patrick chuckled as he settled into the large recliner next to the couch Robson was sitting on, situating Reesa on his lap but not releasing his hold. She sighed and settled in against him, not bothering to fight the inevitable. Robson raised his eyebrows at them and patted Maria’s diapered butt when she started to stir a little.
“Teresa knows she’s supposed to be taking it easy.” Patrick spoke from where he was pressing a kiss to her neck, and Robson couldn’t figure out how he felt about their easy affection. A little grossed out because she was his sister but also maybe… a little jealous?
“What were you doing?” he asked his sister.
“Nothing strenuous,” she claimed quickly, but Patrick just snorted as he trailed his nose up to behind her ear. “I was just going to make dinner.”
Robson shook his head and looked back down at Maria, wondering how he could subtly bring the conversation back around to Marcus.
“So you want to know about Enforcer Rivera, huh?” Reesa asked, grinning when Robson’s head shot up in surprise. “Patrick told me you were asking about him as soon as he walked in the door.”
He shot a glare at his smirking brother-in-law. “I was just commenting on the door, then asked how well you guys knew him. That’s all.”
Patrick frowned. “He gave you the talk, right?”
“No, but I learned about sex a long time ago,” Robson deadpanned.
“Funny. No, I mean the talk about what and who we are and the things we can do.”
Robson nodded. “Yeah. I mean, I still have questions, but he gave me the general spiel about shifters, the abridged history of them, and then some details about the Kincaid Pack in general. He even told me he’d leave it up to me about how much I wanted to share with Hector since he’d seen Marcus’s partial shift too.”
“What did you tell him?” Patrick asked.
“Nothing he hadn’t apparently already figured out.” At Patrick’s and Reesa’s surprised faces, he chuckled softly. “Apparently, Hector is a lot smarter and more observant than the rest of us combined. He said he’d heard some rumors and seen some things in the last few years that had him wondering about certain community members—specifically Kincaid and some of the Enforcers—but that he didn’t want to know any more.”
“Why not?” Teresa said, leaning forward a little like she couldn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to be involved with the Kincaid Pack if given the option.
Robson shrugged with one shoulder, careful not to disturb Maria. “He said anyone who kept themselves secret like that had the potential of resulting in a dangerous situation and he didn’t want to get himself or his family involved. I don’t blame him, honestly.”
Patrick nodded, eyes dropping to Maria and briefly flashing. “He’s not wrong,” he murmured.
There was a moment where they were all silent, each of them no doubt contemplating what might be on the horizon and the impact it could have on their loved ones.
Finally, Reesa cleared her throat. “Okay, well, what else do you want to know?” She leaned forward a little, smiling eagerly at Robson. “I don’t know everything, obviously, but I’ve gotten a crash course since mating Patrick. The class at the rec center has been very informative too.”
Robson narrowed his eyes and looked between them. “What class? Is that what you were doing there when I ran into you all?”
“Huh.” Reesa turned to her husband—er, mate. Or are they both married and mated? “I wonder why he didn’t tell Robito about the classes and mentoring program.”
Patrick shrugged and leaned back in the recliner, finally seeming to have satisfied his urge to sniff Robson’s sister. “Maybe he didn’t want to brag? Or he didn’t think Robson would be interested in attending…”
“Hello? Right here. What classes?” He waved his hand at them to bring their attention back to him.
“Marcus and Vanessa—another pack Enforcer—are hosting… education classes, I guess you could call them, at the rec center once a week and starting a mentorship program,” Reesa explained.
“Well, the mentorship program I hear was Jamie’s idea,” Patrick put in. “Rumor has it that was what got him the job as Alpha Kincaid’s assistant.”
Robson was so confused. “Wait, wait, wait. Why would shifters need education classes? And why are you basing information on rumors? Can’t you just ask one of the Enforcers or that Jamie guy? And also, why do shifters need mentors?”
