hesitation as my lips met hers.
I blinked and stared at Kenna, my heart speeding up.
“Did you see something?” she asked, her voice low. I nodded. I brought her hand to my bare chest and laid her palm over my heart. “It’s fast.”
“It’s because of you.” My voice was rough, and my heart accelerated more with her skin pressed against mine.
Her blue eyes glinted in the dim lighting. Gods, I couldn’t endure this anymore.
I tugged her arm and pulled her to me.
Kenna
I didn’t resist. How could I when he looked at me with such intense dark eyes, when his heart beat so fast under my palm, when he looked so handsome and so vulnerable in his bed, his sculpted torso bare and calling for me.
I scooted into his lap and leaned into him at the same time he wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.
His breathing became shallow gasps as he tilted his chin up and our lips met. A jolt coursed through me, igniting my insides, fevering my desire.
His mouth moved against mine, so soft, so hard, so relentless. I parted my lips and he took over. He claimed my body and soul with his kiss, making me breathless, lightheaded. I never knew a kiss could taste this good, could make me feel so many things at the same time.
Devon tugged the hem of my tank top and I lifted my arms. We briefly broke the kiss so he could slip my shirt over my head. Then, his mouth was back on mine, my chest pressed to his. Holy shit, his skin was warm on mine, and I could feel his heart beating inside me.
A gasp escaped my throat when he suddenly broke the kiss again and flipped us over. He laid me on his bed, his powerful body hovering over mine. His dark eyes drank me in, exploring every inch of my face, of my bare breasts, of my midriff. Warmth spread on my cheeks.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered.
He lowered his body to mine and I gasped again, enjoying his weight pressed over me. He swallowed my gasp with his mouth before deepening the kiss and moving his hips against mine, drawing another gasp from me.
I felt like I was larger than life, like I would explode out of my own skin at any moment, like I couldn’t get enough of him, of his lips, of his hard, hot body, of his hands on me. All of that only multiplied once all of our clothes were gone and we became one. Holy shit! I held on to him while he took me to heights I never knew possible, little moans escaping my throat every few seconds.
After, Devon lay beside me and pulled me to him. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight, his head nestled on my shoulder.
“You’re my destiny,” he whispered in my ear. “I’m sure of it.”
That single thought clamped around my heart and squeezed hard. Because as much as I liked the idea of being his destiny and staying with him, I knew it wasn’t possible. Cecilia and I would have to leave. That much was certain, especially since the demons had already found me in this town. Shit, I hadn’t even told Lia about that yet. I wondered if she would just chalk it up to a coincidence and ignore it, since she was happy now.
I turned my head to Devon, wanting to see him, this new piece of my own happiness, but his eyes were closed. His breathing had slowed. He was deeply asleep.
I stayed there, letting him hold me, while I held him, wishing this was a viable future.
Past
Devon
Devon knew he didn’t deserve the happiness he felt. After all, he wasn’t human. He shouldn’t feel like a human.
He shouldn’t love another human.
But he couldn’t help it. He loved Kianna more than anything else in this world, and he had a feeling he had never loved anything, anyone like that in his previous human life.
Whenever he could, he spent time with Kianna. Touching her, making her smile, taking care of her, kissing her. He felt drunk, completely addicted to her. But there were moments when he forced himself to part from her, so he could work in the field. He worked relentlessly sometimes well into the middle of the night, all so he could take more breaks the next day, and be beside the woman who had stolen his heart.
One sunny afternoon, Devon worked the field with Ophelia and Giles,
