Dangerous Rescue - Linzi Baxter Page 0,8
calling was Hudson. She had his number, and it would be so easy to dial.
Will he want to help after he finds out about our daughter?
Siena pulled into her driveway and turned off the car.
Her neighbor Angel’s lights were on, but she was at Siena’s, watching Mia. Angel helped Siena out when she had to work late. Before getting out of the car, Siena surveyed the area, not sure what she should look for. Hudson had taught herself self-defense during the short time they were together. She’d kept up with the classes after she moved to California, but they’d never taught her what to keep an eye out for, only how to fight back and run away.
She held her keys between her fingers and made a dash for the front door and threw it open. After getting inside, she locked the deadbolt and leaned against the door.
“Mommy,” Mia yelled as she ran to her and wrapped her little arms around her legs.
“Thank God,” she mumbled.
Angel stood to the side. She was wearing a pair of black yoga pants and a white T-shirt. She didn’t go in to the real estate office very often and only went in the morning. Siena had once thought about asking if her company was hiring.
Angel had one brow raised. She was good at telling when something was wrong.
Siena had to pack a bag for herself and her daughter. They could stay at a hotel until she had the locks changed. In her mind, she made a list of things she needed to do. Lists helped ease the tension building between her eyes. She could check things off as she completed them. It helped her feel grounded and in control of her life.
Siena leaned down and hugged her daughter. There was no denying she was Hudson’s. Her striking blue eyes were like his. She placed a kiss on Mia’s cheek before telling her to go pack an overnight bag so they could have a sleep over at Angel’s. Luckily her daughter didn’t ask any questions, she was excited to have a sleep over at Angel’s house. Her friend continued to stare at her until Mia ran down the hallway.
“So you’re finally moving in with me,” Angel teased once Mia was gone. “I’m not sure how I will be at this lesbian thing, but I’m game to give it a try.” Of course, Angel would make a joke when Siena needed it most.
“Funny. No, I think we’re going to go to a hotel for the night. We need a place to stay until I can get the locks changed.” Siena set her purse on the counter. “Kyle confronted me on my way to my car.”
“Fuck.” Angel’s eyes narrowed. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“What could you have done? I kicked him in the balls and ran. On my way home, I watched to see if someone was following me.”
“And how exactly do you know if someone is following you?”
Mia came hopping back into the room with a large smile. Her blonde locks bounced with each step. She had her small pink-elephant backpack over one shoulder and her blanket in her hand.
“Can you watch her for a few? I’m going to go pack so we can leave.” Siena paused. “And nobody turned down the same street as me.”
Kyle probably wouldn’t know how to tail someone. But she did worry that the men who were after him might be smarter and know how to stay far enough back that she wouldn’t know if they were behind her.
“Or we can all head over to my place,” Angel said.
“Mia is the most important thing. I also don’t want to put you in any danger.”
Her friend cocked her head as if trying to figure out a puzzle. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll take her over, and you’d better be right behind us.”
“If I’m not there in five minutes, come looking for me, but don’t leave her alone, please.”
Angel glared at her before nodding and swooping Mia up into her arms. Mia’s laughter filled the room. Siena placed a quick kiss on Mia’s cheek before heading down the hallway to her bedroom to pack.
She grabbed her suitcase, threw in a few things she would need for work. First thing in the morning, she planned to call a locksmith. Staying next door would make life easier, but it would also put her friend in danger. Siena grabbed another outfit, shut off the lights to her small home, and locked the door. After work, she would
