the border?”
A secretive smile played along Buddy’s lips. “I didn’t check anything. You seem to forget that I’m the team leader on this mission. I make the decisions, not you or anyone else out there. The plan is to get the sat phone and make the call, and someone will come to pick us up or tell us where the pickup location moved to.”
“We're sitting ducks. It’s only a matter of time before we're spotted.” Hudson had a sick feeling Buddy and his crew had something going on in the background.
“I have a contact,” one of the women from the corner whispered. “They could help us get out of here tonight. I know they will because Tamara and I were planning our escape for weeks.”
“I’m not going to take your word for anything,” Buddy replied. “I saw you cry when we took you from your husband, and you three have sat there and cried the whole time. Nothing you can say will change my mind. Honestly, I think we should handcuff you to make sure you don’t try to run back to your worthless husband.”
“You won’t lay a hand on those women.” Hudson stood in front of Buddy. “Our mission was to get them out alive.”
“Actually, our mission was to get the other wife out alive.” Scar stared down at Buddy. “What I’m still trying to figure out is why you let her go. The man who held her was our target. You could have easily taken the shot.”
“If you were so close to seeing my angle, then why didn’t you take down the fucker? Instead, you’re sitting here blaming me for some bitch getting away. It’s not like she would know anything, anyway. Men don’t tell their bitches anything. Especially supposed terrorists, but you saw that place. The intel was wrong—not one computer or device was there. And these women don’t know anything,” Buddy said.
A knot formed in Hudson’s gut. His instincts told him Rock and his men were hiding something, and he worried that it wasn’t a sanctioned part of the mission. They could have escaped the city by now.
Hudson glanced at his watch. Slug had left three hours earlier. The men were planning something.
“I had a shot until Rock stepped in front of my gun.” Scar turned toward Rock and glared, his jaw tightening. “I’m with Casper on this one. I think we leave at nightfall. Sitting here is only making things worse. And furthermore, when do you let one of your teammates wander around a hostile area alone?”
Rock shrugged. “He had something he needed to take care of. You two worry too much. Things will happen very soon.”
Scar’s chin jerked down. “Fine. Why don’t you guys take a nap since you had the night shift last night.”
“I’m not going to turn down sleep.” Buddy turned and headed to the other room.
Rock’s fists tightened at his sides, and his knuckles turned white before he turned and left. The women in the room relaxed once Buddy and Rock were gone.
Scar stared at Hudson for a second before walking across the room. He stopped only a few feet in front of him. “Something’s not right. We need to leave tonight and I think without them.”
Two SEALs leading a group of three women would be hard but not impossible. Hudson agreed with Scar that they couldn’t sit around and wait for these guys to make a plan. “What are you thinking?”
Scar looked over at the women curled in a ball together. They weren’t crying anymore, only watching his and Hudson’s every move. “I think the best idea is to work with them and get to a sat phone. Then we call back to base.”
Leaving three of the team behind wouldn’t go well with the higher-ups. “Or we could get hold of Xavier Smith to have him evac the women to Germany and come back here.”
“You know how to get hold of the CIA agent? I’m not sure how much we can trust him. That fucker saved my ass a few times but always took the target out or fucked shit up.”
At least Hudson’s team wasn’t the only one to get frustrated by what Xavier had pulled over the years. “He’s an asshole and never lets anyone know the full plan, but he will get these women out of here. And I have a feeling Rock isn’t telling us everything.”
A loud bang sounded in the front of the house before two Houthi insurgents rushed into the room. The three women let
