Dangerous Rescue - Linzi Baxter Page 0,34
the force was helping the people who were after her. Siena really had to wonder if the detective on the case had something to do with Kyle getting out. He didn't seem to care that she hadn’t known about that. But maybe he was just really shitty at his job.
“I need to get out of here and get home to Mia.”
An infectious smile spread across Gumby’s face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. A couple of taps later, an image of Mia came up on his phone. She was sitting on the floor, playing with their large dog.
“I think Hannah’s going to sleep well tonight for the first time in a long time. Your little girl ran her wild all day long. She's a great girl.” Siena leaned forward and grabbed the phone from Gumby's hand. She couldn't help but smile. For years, Mia had asked for a dog, and they couldn't have one because they didn’t have time to take care of it.
The door to the room swung open again. The officer who reminded her of her father stepped into the room. He ran a hand over his face and let out a sigh. “You're free to leave, Miss Davenport. But a word of advice—watch your back.”
Gumby was at her side within seconds. “Is there a reason you just threatened Siena?”
The officer shook his head. “I'm getting too old for this shit. I was just saying watch your back because there are people out there that seem to want you behind bars for crimes you didn't even commit. Whoever is after you has a lot of connections. It seems some of those connections are even in the police force. I do have to ask, if you find or see your ex again, please call me.” He reached into his pocket, drew out a small white rectangular card, and handed it to her. Siena placed it in her purse.
Gumby shook the officer’s hand. “Can you do the same—if you hear anything, let us know?” The officer gave them a tight nod, and Gumby handed over a piece of paper with his phone number.
“You know, Miss Davenport, whoever wanted to frame you has people watching their back, but it seems you also have someone watching yours. Whoever pulled strings to get you out of here has connections.”
Siena chuckled inside. She wasn't the one with the connections. It was Hudson. Even though she was mad as hell at him for what he'd done in the past, he and his friends were the reason she could walk out of the police station. And she would get to see her daughter within a half hour.
She followed Gumby out of the station. The cops gave her a dirty look as she walked by. When she and Gumby reached the front doors, she sighed as the California heat hit her face.
Mia sat curled up on Siena’s lap. They were next door at Gumby and Sidney's house. Originally, the plan was to invite all of Gumby and Hudson’s teammates over so she could meet them, but she wasn't in the mood to be around a bunch of people. All she wanted to do was hold her daughter.
Kaiden pulled the toasted marshmallow off of his stick, placed it on a graham cracker with chocolate, and handed it to Mia. It was the fourth one she’d had that night. She loved sweet things. Hannah sat at Mia’s side.
Kaiden stood and smiled down at Mia. “Hey, chipmunk, you want to go inside with me?”
Her little lip stuck out. “I don't want to leave Hannah.”
Siena kissed her daughter on the forehead. “You can see the big dog again tomorrow. I think it's time for you to go get tucked in and ready for bed because Hannah is getting her sleep right now, and she's going to be able to outrun you tomorrow.”
Mia stared down at the dog before nodding. “I'll go in now, but Kaiden has to read me a bedtime story.”
The teenager swooped down and threw her out over his shoulder, and she let out a squeal. “I agree to read a bedtime story,” he said, “but we’re not reading the princess book tonight. We need some goonies.”
It was nice to see Kaiden take such good care of Mia. Siena wanted to follow them in and not let Mia out of her sight, but she also wanted to talk to Gumby and Sidney. When they got into the car after leaving the police station, Gumby’s phone
