Dangerous Rescue - Linzi Baxter Page 0,33
her students see her in cuffs. The nicer detective brought her to the room and told her everything would be okay before he exited. His brown eyes reminded her of her father’s. If her dad were still alive, he would look similar to the older detective.
Nobody allowed her to make her one phone call. It wouldn’t do much good unless they let her have her phone. She didn’t know anyone’s numbers by heart. Her only hope was that Becky could get hold of a lawyer for her. She wouldn’t even be able to reach Hudson. At least her daughter was safe at Gumby’s house. When Siena didn’t show up later, maybe he would call Cy, and they would find her.
But she wasn’t sure how much that would help. She’d been alone in the parking lot with her ex, and nobody saw him assault her. Now she was being questioned because Kyle showed up at her work.
The white door swung open. She expected one of the detectives to come into the room. Instead, Gumby stood there a black shirt and jeans. “Mind if I join you?”
She shook her head. “It’s bad. I’m not sure how, but they think I’m the reason Kyle is missing.” She glanced at the mirror, wondering if the detectives were on the other side, waiting for her to make a mistake and admit she’d done something wrong.
“You’ll be out of here soon.” Gumby shrugged and sat down.
“They think I’m the reason my ex hasn’t checked in with his corrections officer. The detective showed me a photo of Kyle and me in the parking lot, but they didn’t show the one where he had a knife to my throat. This is really bad, Gumby. Whoever sent those photos is trying to set me up. What happens if Kyle is in danger?” She hated her ex and believed he should serve his time behind bars, but that didn’t mean she wanted the man dead.
“We already know he’s dealing with dangerous men. But you have two alibis for the night he accosted you in the parking lot. One is out there right now, explaining how you were attacked and how Kyle drove off. He’s almost done giving his statement.”
“Doesn’t Hudson need to catch a flight?” she asked, feeling a little less nervous than before.
Gumby tapped his finger on the table. “Yes, and he’s on his way to who knows where. Hudson wasn’t the only person in the parking lot that night. Kaiden caught everything. When he found out the reason you were taken in, he wanted to give his side of the story. You’re lucky Kaiden was there, because the camera footage from that night is gone. Cy is working some computer geek magic on the device, but he’s not sure he can restore the deleted footage.”
She was deeply grateful Kaiden and Hudson had been in the parking lot. She didn’t want to dive much deeper into who’d set her up to be arrested as long as they were in the police station. Hopefully, Gumby would fill her in on the rest of the story once they left.
Her mind flashed back to the night Kyle had confronted her. She hadn’t known Kaiden and Hudson were watching. Instead of paying attention to her surroundings, she’d walked out to her car, looking down at her phone in a dark parking lot. That had given Kyle the ability to sneak up on her.
“Gumby, I don't think it's the best idea for Kaiden to be putting a statement out.” She held up her hand so he wouldn't say anything. “Think about it. Whoever is doing this set me up, and they're making it look like Kyle disappeared. What happens if he’s dead? Now Kaiden's name will be on some report saying he's helping me get out of this.”
The metal chair creaked as Gumby leaned back. “Kaiden wasn't our first choice. Hudson is already on a flight overseas, and there's no way we can turn the plane around for him to come back and give a statement. Yes, they have no information on you at all, but we would rather have the cops not looking into you.” He let out a sigh and glanced at the mirror on the wall. “There are things we need to talk about, but I can't do that inside here. There are people listening.”
A chill went down Siena's spine. The only reason he wouldn't want to say anything inside the room would be because he was worried that somebody on
