child out of there, but if Christian insisted… if Christian was remotely as tough as a young teen as he was now? Maybe Jolene really couldn’t do anything about it.
“You sure you wanna spend your life with a man that could shoot his father in cold blood?”
“I’m sure I wanna marry you,” I said with conviction. “Wanna talk about it?” I asked, feeling so much for him.
“Later,” he said. He turned the ignition.
“You’re their Superman, too, you know?”
“Later baby, please?” He turned the key and we headed out of there.
“Okay.” I turned the radio up.
Elton John’s Tiny Dancer played.
“This is some seventies music I can get behind,” he said. “Fuckin’ Bee Gees…” He shook his head at me.
I smiled and grabbed a Kleenex and dabbed at my misty eyes.
“Actually,” he admitted, “Grandparents took us to see a Saturday Night Fever and Staying Alive double-bill at the drive-in when we were kids once for retro night. They had an old van with a bed in the back and we spent a lot of time at the drive-in when they’d take us for weekends. I wouldn’t admit it, but watched the whole thing.”
I scoffed. “People say they don’t like disco but come on. Kung Fu Fighting? Who doesn’t sing along to that? I love cleaning the house to that. And Disco Inferno? Hot Stuff? Boney M and Earth, Wind, and Fire? And there’s just something about that Saturday Night Fever soundtrack for me. I watch the movie for comfort sometimes.” I shrugged. “When I’ve dealt with bullshit from my mom. When I’m mad at everyone around me. Watched it three times the week after Luke’s funeral.”
His expression dropped.
I shook it off. “Yes. I watched it that night at the cabin because my family was mad about the calendar and because of you and that fire alarm.”
He gave me what looked like an apologetic look but didn’t say anything.
“Want a bite of my donut?” I held it up.
“Yeah.”
I held it out and he took a bite and we pulled onto the interstate.
I ate bites and shared bites with him alternately with my hand on his thigh. He steered with his left hand so he could put his hand on top of mine.

We checked into a hotel, getting a junior suite. We had a sitting area as well as a bedroom. He went to get a few hours of sleep while I pulled out my laptop, which I’d brought knowing it’d make our planning easier. I saw then how tired he looked and realized though I’d gone to sleep early the night before, maybe he’d lain awake stressing about his mother. I’d offered to drive part of the way, but he kept saying he was fine.
I texted Dad to tell him we arrived safely and then I phoned Delia, who screamed in happiness instead of saying hello.
“I’m telling you; I had this feeling in my kitchen, and I didn’t wanna say it, but I felt something with you two. And then when I saw the way he looked after you on my front lawn while the house was on fire? Putting your trackpants on for you when you were so shocked you didn’t even register you were in your skivvies, the way he was holding you like you were precious... that’s exactly how he cradled you in his arms, Jojogirl. He’s perfect for you! I am sure of it. That man is gonna take care of you. But sweetness, he’s got some demons. You might need to be mindful of that and patient.”
“Believe me, Aunt Delia, with Christian Forker, I’ve got all the patience in the world. I’m already getting the payoff and I know I picked the right man to marry.”
She went on about how he saved me again and that it was fate that kept throwing us together. And then she told me she was going to tan my ass for putting myself in that calendar, which had caused quite the stir in the Sioux Falls Clubhouse. There were a lot of angry bikers who were pissed about it, she said, but then she went on about how gorgeous I was and how she’d do it if she was still nineteen and talked about how I’d bring my dad and brothers more business. Delia was awesome.
After I let her go on the phone, I got into a group chat with Ella and Laura to brainstorm about the plan for the wedding. Pippa and Jenna were busy working.
