Coyote (Hawks MC Next Generation #1) - Lila Rose Page 0,26

when the shock had worn off and she started being herself again that she’d found the strength to move on. She was damn brave. Damn amazing.

“She kicked arse again. Was a sight to see.”

“It was. Though, why did she learn in the first place? Not many women would want to learn self-defence unless there was another reason.” I couldn’t help but think it had something to do with her father. The way Stanley spoke of him told me he thought her dad was a pile of shit. What had happened?

“You’re right. You think she has other troubles?”

“I think she had them, but not now.”

“You wanna find out though, don’t you?”

“I do.”

“So…,” he drew out. “You still reckon I can have a go at her?” My upper lip rose before I could blank my expression. Ruin started laughing. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

“Don’t know what you’re talkin’ about,” I said, ignoring the foul taste in my mouth.

“Brother, don’t bullshit me.”

“I ain’t.”

“Yeah right. She sure looked comfy in your arms.”

“Brother, I was consoling her after all the shit she’d been through.”

“Yeah, yeah. What a fucked-up situation. Never thought they’d be stupid enough to ram the damn car. Why now?”

“My guess? He was gettin’ sick of waitin’. Probably thought he would take one of us on, but not two.” I paused as a burning sensation started in my chest. “He nearly had her—”

“Brother—”

“No. He did. If I hadn’t fuckin’ woke up when I did, he would have shot and killed her.”

“Coyote, don’t go down that road. Things worked out.”

Through my tight jaw, I snarled, “She shouldn’t have been damn involved in the first place. Those fuckers have to pay.”

“You know they will. Prez will make sure of it, and when we get to the compound, we’ll find out more. But how’re you feelin’?”

I snorted. My head was fucking killing me and my body felt like it’d gone a few rounds in the boxing ring. “Fine.”

He chuckled. “I call bullshit again, but I’ll let the prez deal with you.”

No matter. I wouldn’t leave the damn compound until all this crap was over, for Channa’s sake. She needed to go back to her normal life. A life I could tell she was happy in. There could be a few changes to her life, like a few new people in it because I knew Ruin wanted to get to know her. Maybe he did want to date her. I also wanted to find out some things about her, and to do that, we’d have to spend some time together. The thought of that sounded good to me.

At the compound, I climbed out of the car a bit slower than I normally would. Yet, even with how shit I felt, I would still be there so I could get my own hits in on the motherfuckers.

We made our way into the common room. Even in the early hours a few brothers were hanging around on their day off with some club bunnies. To start with, the club didn’t have women hanging about who were after a brother for the night because Mum hated it. Over the years, she’d been more lenient. She also trusted Dad completely. She didn’t want to hold the brothers back from enjoying their lives.

“Trig,” I called. “Where’s the prez?”

“Office, I think. Glad you’re okay, Coyote.” A few others called out something similar.

With a wave, I said, “Thanks, brothers.”

He saluted me with a drink. I glanced at Ruin, only he’d stopped by the TV and looked tense. “Ruin?” I called and then glanced at the screen. A guy was on stage singing something.

“Comin’,” he said, and with a final look at the TV, he moved towards me.

“You know him?”

“Yeah, you should too. He’s a year older than Swan and used to live next door to her. They were friends. A couple of years ago, he and his family moved to the US. Guess he made it big.” He shrugged.

“How’d you know about that?”

He chuckled. “Griz was complain’ to Stoke one day when I was over there, sayin’ he hated the friendship they had, went on and on about it. He wanted to kick the guy’s arse, even though he was a kid, because he used to look at Swan like she’d hung the moon for him. Bet Griz was happy when they moved.”

“Huh, never heard of him. What was his name?”

“Lochlan Humphrey.”

“It ain’t ringing any bells.”

“Doesn’t matter anyway.” He smiled and reached out to knock on the office door.

“Enter,” Talon called. Ruin opened it
