“Be careful what you wish for.”
“What?”
I grin. “I’ll kiss your ass… after I spank the shit out of it.”
The woman in line in front of me turns her green eyes on me and smiles as she ogles me. I lift a brow. A few years ago, I might have whispered in her ear and asked her if she wanted a try.
Today, I turn away and look out the window as I listen to the panting coming from the other end of the phone. I’m in San Francisco tying up a bounty. I plan to board the private jet from here to head out to New York.
“We’re going to talk when I get there. Your temper has been one of the reasons you haven’t been placed on a real assignment. You’re the top of your class. There’s no reason that you shouldn’t be out in the field,” I say in a hushed tone once again.
“Bullshit and you know it. Nate won’t send me out because he has no clue who I am. You know what, John? You’re getting on my nerves.”
I laugh. “What’s wrong, baby? I know it’s been a while since you’ve seen me. I promise, I’ll give you a big hug when I see you.”
“Damn, she’s lucky,” the woman in front of me mutters as she fans herself.
“Fuck you,” Roni hisses. “Get your ass on that plane so I can get out of here and have a beer or ten. I need a break.”
I get serious. “I’m on my way. Stay out of trouble until I get there.”
I hand my money over to the clerk that looks at me with big brown eyes. She’s nothing more than a teenager. You would think she were staring at a movie star. The woman that had been ahead of me, looks over from the other register.
“Honey, I know. He’s simply gorgeous,” she says to my clerk.
“Um, that will be $10.27,” the clerk says.
“Right… I gave you a twenty.” I lift a brow.
“Oh,” she says, looking down at the twenty in her hand as if she has no clue how it got there.
I shake my head and grin as I open the water I just paid for to take a sip. This is why I appreciate Roni so much. While I know she’s attracted to me, I’m never left feeling like she’s never heard a damn thing I’ve said.
Living in California it all gets really old, super-fast. In all honesty, I miss Roni and can’t wait to get to New York.
“I’m going to my room. I have plans with that vibrator I ordered on your credit card.”
I choke on the sip of water I just took. I know that she’s memorized the card numbers from the first time I gave them to her. I don’t mind that she uses them when she wants and I’ve never monitored her purchases, but there is something about knowing I’ve paid for a vibrator that will be between her legs.
“Roni,” I say in warning. “Tell me you’re joking.”
She gives a small laugh. It makes my heart skip a beat. It’s been a while since I’ve heard that laugh.
“Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“Angel, I promise you the real thing is better, but if you want to torture yourself—” Shit. My other line beeps. Probably for the best because I’m horny as fuck and now I have images of my face between her legs as I put that vibrator in her ass running through my head. “Fuck. That’s not my other line. Roni, I have to go.”
“What’s wrong?”
“That’s not a call. It’s the alarm system at my brother’s house is going off. I need to get there. I’ll call you later.”
With that, I turn to rush out to the car to head for Wyatt’s. I don’t have a good feeling about this. Fuck, I knew it’s been too quiet.

I don’t know what’s going on with John, but I didn’t like the sound of his voice when he hung up earlier. I already get the feeling he’s not coming as planned. I stare down at my phone as I chew on my lip.
If his family needs him, I shouldn’t be a pain. However, I can’t stop the churning feeling in my stomach. I look up as I hear voices up the hall.
