would have been shut down years ago. But what the owners don’t see, they don’t know—right?”
I went back to my seat and flopped into the chair. “Right.”
“Other than that, he was pretty much off grid.” Hex shrugged. “People don’t realize how much others can tell about them through their credit card records.”
I rubbed my eyes. “But he didn’t have a credit card.”
“No.” Hex sighed. “For a hacker, that’s like chasing a ghost.”
“I’ve never heard you talked like this before, Hex.” I leaned in. “Are you saying it’s impossible?”
If looks could kill.
“Don’t be a dick.” She grumbled. “I’m not saying it’s not impossible—just very, very frustrating. I have a software trying to do a little facial rec on him. It’s going to be rough but at least we’ll have something of a map.”
“I’m going to try getting some shut-eye.” I told her, knowing it would have to be a miracle if I got any sleep. “Let me know what you find.”

I woke up with the sunlight in my face, my body tangled in a comfortable blanket and one leg sticking out at the bottom. For a second, I didn’t know where I was, and I didn’t care. The blanket was soft and warm and sensual against my skin. The pillows were the right firmness, and the mattress held my body like a lover.
Then it all crashed down on me.
My brother was dead and the night before I watched the man who was supposed to protect me kill a man by crushing his face.
My heart raced.
Hermes was the trickster—but from what I remembered he could be volatile if tested. They’d chosen the perfect callsign for Maksim.
A part of me was terrified of Hermes.
Another part of me was hot for him.
I frowned.
So, he looked like everything from every, single one of my wet dreams.
So, I had a thing for men with large hands.
So, his icy blue eyes were sexy enough to look through my soul.
I sighed.
Frustrated, I covered my face, wanting a few more seconds before I venture back into the breach.
When I rolled over to stare at the back of my closed door and to check out the room. A bag, seemingly from a high-end clothing store, sat on a plus chair close to the bookshelf.
Was that there last night?
Curious, I scrambled from bed and rushed over to check it out. A note was stuck to the outside and I pulled it off.
Get dressed and come out for breakfast.” Time’s-a-wastin’—Hermes.
Excited, I looked inside and began removing things. The jeans, and tops weren’t surprising. When my hand hit the bone of a brassier, my jaw dropped. “Um, what-in-the…” The first bra was black, a zipper at the front. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved having those kinds of bras. The second was a deep blue, hooked at the back but beautiful. The third was pink, covered in cherry blossom buds.
I held it up to check the tag and realized they were perfect. Still, reeling, I stuck my hand in again to find a couple pairs of panties.
I choked.
Did this man go out and buy me intimates?
Even as I washed in the shower, I couldn’t get over it.
Eventually, I entered the living space to find him eating scrambled eggs and staring intently at his laptop’s screen.
“I wonder what they were doing there?” Montana’s voice escaped the screen. “I mean, there couldn’t have been a way to know she was coming. We haven’t told anyone.”
“Maybe the guard did.” Hermes looked over at me as he replied.
Something played about his eyes. I tried figuring out what it was, but he looked back at the screen. Embarrassed, I sat beside Hermes and waved at Montana.
“How are you holding up?” Montana asked.
“I’m still standing.” I offered a smile. “I’m okay.”
“Babe?” A woman called from off screen. “I’m heading out.”
She stepped into view to kiss him “Don’t forget, Emma wants you to take her to the park. I tried and she wants you.”
“I won’t forget.” He grinned impishly and kissed her again.
“You’re quite proud of yourself, aren’t you?” Sadie asked.
Montana laughed. “Of course, I am.”
“And if she comes home covered in mud, you’re washing her.”
“It happened once!” Montana laughed. “But I can’t make any promises it won’t again. If we see a puddle it shall be jumped in.”
Sadie laughed—even her laugh was perfect.
I wanted to hate her. But how could I? If Montana fell for her that meant she was an angel.
I was sick to my stomach.
There was no way my soul would let me
