my arm. “Uncertainty Bracelet? Because nobody’s sure what it does?”
“Oh, lots of people know what it can do. But that one there is only the second that’s known to exist. I can only hope you’re not here to sell it. I couldn’t pay that price, I’m afraid. It’s easily worth more than all of Cromp Base. Probably, you could buy Kur Station with it and still have enough money left for a very comfortable retirement.”
I look at the thin, metallic bracelet with new interest. “What does it do?”
Puf does something frightening with his gigantic mouth that could well be a smile. “That’s where the uncertainty comes in, Averie.”

The next few days pass both very fast and very slowly. In the daytime, Zaroc goes to the shipyard and I spend time with Puf, being shown what all his curiosities are and also practicing to get my bracelet to work. The not-alligator says that to the Elders, it was probably quite easy to get it to function, because they had different brains and probably better focus. It’s an unrewarding and frustrating struggle so far, but I’m determined to get there.
In the night time, Zaroc and I make love in our small cabin on the station, exploring each other to our hearts’ content.
In other words, I’m having the time of my life, and the future is looking good. Because it has Zaroc in it.
He and I will stay one step ahead of the Gurandu and the Bululg, I’ll see if I can track down some of the Bululg’s other enemies and then organize some kind of resistance movement. I don’t know where to start, but being on a mission to free Earth actually feels pretty good.

“You bit me.”
I lie beside Zaroc, drawing little circles on the scales and skin of his chest.
“Hmm?”
“You bit me. That first day.”
His hand seeks my shoulder, gently stroking across the place his fangs pierced me. “I did. And you hit me across the face.”
“Hey, you put me in a cage that zapped me. And then you bit me. I think I was entitled to a little bit of revenge. I don’t actually remember what happened after. Did I make a fool of myself? Did I laugh?”
“You laughed. And then you became very eager for me to mate with you.”
“Greatest date drug ever. For you, I mean. It must make girls so easy. Does your venom do that to everybody?”
“It does that to nobody. Everyone else just dies in a split second. You not only survived, but seemed to be filled with a feverish energy.”
I stiffen. “Everyone else dies?!”
“As far as I know, nobody else has ever survived a Lancefer bite. Grandmother couldn’t believe it. Nor could I.”
I change my position to see his face. “You actually tried to kill me?”
“My body did. It acted so fast I couldn’t stop. Pure instinct. You took me by surprise. I stopped as soon as I could, but it was too late.”
“You pounced so fast I couldn’t see you move. I whacked you across the face, and the next thing I know, I have two pinpricks on my shoulder.”
He strokes my shoulder again with great tenderness. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry I did that. And I think you know that I’m very, very happy you turned out to be so unusually hardy.”
“Me, too. So, you had me begging for your cock, right? Do I remember correctly? But you didn’t give it to me. And I saw your bulge – you probably wanted to.”
He chuckles. “‘Wanted to’ is putting it too weakly. I was absolutely aching to. But you were not being yourself. And it was plainly the wrong thing to do.”
I lie back down. It seems space has a way of changing your standards. It’s a tough galaxy, and a guy not taking advantage of you is something I shouldn’t take for granted anymore. “It was.”
Zaroc goes up on one elbow and looks down at me. “But then, you’re extremely resilient, just generally. Is that common on your planet?”
I think about it. “I never saw myself as that resilient. If I am, I think maybe being in space made me like that.”
He strokes my hair, curling one lock around his finger. “How would you like to be the mother of the next Lancefer royal family?”
“I don’t know. Is that on offer?”
“If things work out the way we hope they will, I will absolutely try to restore myself and my descendants to power. But not only will I
