He inhaled, and his mouth stretched into a grin as I did my best not to react. I held his gaze, and swallowed hard. Holy fuck, I was so stupid! That’s why he went supernova on Drake yesterday. Only a potential mate could scent another’s arousal. My wolf had tried to bond with Connor’s four years ago when he’d kissed me, but we’d never truly discussed how either of us felt. The thought that he might want me as badly as I wanted him, made my whole body weak. I curled my fingers around the ropes to make their trembling less obvious, trying to concentrate on what he was saying.
“Okay, let me explain what’s really happening in this prison, and then you can make a choice about what you do next.” Connor’s eyes darkened when he glanced over at Drake, who kept peering at us.
I swallowed hard. Drake was a nice guy, and gorgeous to boot, but I’d made it clear I wasn’t going to sleep with him, even if he was my alpha. He’d seemed to respect that, and I’d been given my own cell, but it was clear as part of his pack, I was expected to follow his lead. It wouldn’t be long before he realised I didn’t do what was expected of me—that I have my own mind, and plans.
“How about I tell you what I think, and then you correct me where I’m wrong?” I said, impressed I managed to sound relatively in control when Connor’s scent was doing strange things to my mind as well as my body.
“Okay, go ahead,” He cocked his head expectantly.
“Fine. Ok, obviously this isn’t a normal prison. From what I’ve learned, the unfortunate inmates are a mix of criminals and innocents, but they are all shifters of some kind. You have the power to keep them in line because you’re a Prime, and Doherty needs you to prevent anarchy. At a guess, Doherty wants to use us all for something; to make money, I assume; that’s usually what evil bastards like him want.” I faced Connor and tilted my head. “How am I doing so far?”
He gave me that gorgeous smile again, not taking his eyes off me. “Good, keep going.”
I narrowed my eyes remembering Charlie’s words. “They need the women in here for something special, don’t they?”
“They do, but I’ll explain soon.”
I grunted, not pushing for answers. Instead, I decided to trust that he would do as he said. Mother wolf, I wanted to trust him, but more to the point, I wanted him to trust me, too. And after yesterday, I had to earn it, just like he did. I continued with my assessment of the hell hole I’d been locked in. “There are four alpha’s: one for each wing. Each controls their own pack of hundreds of shifters, both men and women. Pack marked females seem to be protected and left alone by males from other packs or gen pop, but any unmarked female seems to be fair game…” My voice tightened at that.
“Seemed.” Connor pulled his gaze off me and leaned on the ropes, looking at his clasped hands as he quietly corrected me.
“Okay, seemed, but I still don’t understand you allowing the weak to suffer for so long. That was so wrong.”
He sighed. “I know. ”
I gaped, raising my brows at his unexpected agreement.
Connor grinned, revealing a broken tooth, one of his canines. That smile again. I flushed, unable to drag my attention from the curve of his lips. My gut clenched. That tiny break might stop him claiming me… I blinked rapidly, pressing my thighs together as the thought of him sinking those canines into me as he claimed my body and soul, almost pushed me over the edge. It was damn hard to swallow my groan. Ok, nope, I definitely shouldn’t be going there.
