Wrecked (Shadow Sentinels #2) - Karen Tomlinson Page 0,18

it utterly blank.

“We need evidence of what’s happening behind that door. Find some, or our mutual employer isn’t above using any incentive at his disposal.” Zander leaned forward more.

I contemplated him, my tongue running over my sharp canines, and I wondered what his blood would feel like running down my chin, how hard he would scream when I crushed his bones in my jaws.

Zander smiled coldly. “Don’t even think about it.”

D hit the deck, his body spasming hard against the floor. Every instinct I possessed told me to attack, to fight for my brother, but it would just make this situation worse. I narrowed my eyes, deliberately not watching D convulse.

“You are in a position of power. Why haven’t you found any evidence?” I hadn’t yet figured out Zander’s role in all this. It seemed to me that he was a glorified hunter for the warden; someone who brought in new recruits and inmates, but who wasn’t a prison guard.

His eyes glinted. “Stick to your part in this. Don’t worry about mine. Do what’s necessary or Rawson and your other brothers will suffer.”

It always made me wonder why he sneered at the word brother. It almost sounded as though he was jealous of my pack. I looked into Rawson’s oddly blank eyes. His body was stuck in a place of half-shift. I inhaled sharply, hating to see him manipulated like this. My fists curled and my wolf fixated on Zander’s throat. I forced myself to inhale a deep breath. I didn’t want to cause Rawson or my other brothers any further pain. The cocksucker had me and he knew it. It’s why he came here without guards.

I nodded once.

Zander glanced down, wrinkling his nose at D who was lying unconscious in a pool of his own urine. Fury lit my chest at the degradation he had inflicted upon my friend, but it wasn’t the first time and I doubted it would be the last. The others stood by stoically. They were ready for their turn.

Zander smirked at them one at a time.

They all restrained their snarls and didn’t react.

He shrugged and lifted his hand. Whispering under his breath, he studied his fingernails. They grew into long black claws. I hid my distaste. They weren’t the claws of any animal I recognised. Zander sliced his thumb nail into his wrist and blood welled. He squeezed the deep red droplets against Rawson’s mouth and whispered in the strange language only he used.

My nostrils flared. Something dark stirred inside me every time I heard those words. It was a presence I had never acknowledged and I wouldn’t begin to now. Zander flicked his attention my way as if he sensed it, too. Without reacting, I turned my unblinking gaze to Rawson and hid my anger as Rawson licked Zander’s blood off his lips.

His milky gaze turned to a deep brown, and he blinked twice. His lungs heaved as if he’d just run a marathon and his huge hands clawed at the silver table.

I jumped up as soon as Zander left the room. “Hey man, it’s okay. You’re okay. I’ve got you.” I held his shoulders, trying to reassure him.

“Gods damn it!” Rawson shook his head and as his eyes cleared, he pushed himself up, his bones cracking back into place as he changed back into his full human form. “Fucking cocksucking bastards!” His eyes flickered down to D. “See to him. I’m fine.” His attention flicked on the clock on the wall. We had an hour, one measly hour together, then Zander would return and take him away again.

I nodded and kneeled next to Reed, who had lowered himself down next to our brother. Giving my attention to D gave Rawson time to get his mind back in the game and his body together.

D moaned and shuffled into a sitting position. “Jesus, he’s one sick fuck.”

“He is.” Reed grabbed one arm, and I grabbed the other. Together we helped our brother up. “Use my bathroom, D.”

His cheeks flushed, but it wasn’t with embarrassment. His wolf flashed through his eyes, its anger a scent I totally understood. He nodded. “Thanks, man.”

“There’s clean jeans and stuff on the shelf that’ll fit, too.” I turned to face the others. “You guys, relax.” My wolf was growling in my head. For once I pushed him away, which he didn’t like. “I’m okay here with Rawson. Owen, you can stay, the rest of you, go and get some food, or find someone to fuck, or something.”

“I’ll be outside,”
