played a huge part in that.
She and Diego, along with Kevin’s parents, had sent the kids to Brandon’s bedroom so they could talk in private. Diego filled them in on the details Brandon and Kevin hadn’t known anything about, specifically the part about an undercover officer getting a call to him just in time. After that, they’d all talked about the best way to handle what the kids had done. Deciding it wouldn’t do either Brandon or Kevin any good to forbid them to hang out since they were each other’s only friends, they settled on grounding both kids until school started.
When Kevin and his parents had left, she and Diego had told Brandon he was grounded for the rest of the summer. He and Kevin could hang out at the apartment or at Kevin’s home and play video games, but would only be allowed to go other places if she, Diego, or Kevin’s mother or father were with them. Brandon must have realized he was getting off easy because he didn’t try to argue.
“I think it helped that we presented a united front last night,” she said, giving thanks for what had to be the fiftieth time she had Diego to help her with Brandon. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the maturity he’s displaying right now has a lot to do with you being in our lives. He knows how important you are to me. And I think you’re just as important to him.”
It was impossible to miss the effect her words had on Diego as his eyes blazed vivid yellow-gold and his fingers moved across the table to intertwine with hers. For a moment, she thought dancing might be off the agenda for the night, although she certainly wouldn’t have minded if he wanted to go home and spend some quality time in bed. Or anywhere else, for that matter.
Diego took a deep breath, the glow fading from his eyes as he visibly fought to get himself under control. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t a little disappointed.
“So,” he said slowly, and Bree felt a moment of glee knowing her words had discombobulated him so badly. Big bad SWAT werewolf tripped up by a little romance. “How’s your investigation going? Any progress in figuring out how Dave’s investment firm is involved in those robberies?”
She didn’t think about keeping the newer details of her case from him. As soon as she had the complete picture of Ken’s involvement in the case, it would all be getting turned over to the cops anyway. She wouldn’t mention her little meeting in Dave’s office, though. She had no doubt Diego would be upset if he found out she’d been alone with her psychotic ex-husband. The part about Dave taking his anger out on an innocent paperweight and dripping blood would have Diego sprouting fangs and claws right here in the middle of the club.
“I did find the link between the robberies and Dave’s investment firm, though I’m not quite sure what it means yet,” she said. “It turns out the connection is Ken Reed.”
Diego frowned. “As in the Ken Reed from the diner who took you hostage, then shot himself?”
She shrugged. “Yeah, that one. Don’t ask for the details because I don’t have them yet. All I know for sure is that he was the investment advisor for every one of the victims in my robbery cases, along with some that aren’t mine.”
“What do you mean, some that aren’t yours?”
“Until today, I’d been working on the assumption there were four robberies and that the victims were all LMG clients.” Thank goodness for Jerri at Garrett, Wallace, and Banks. Bree wouldn’t have learned anything if it wasn’t for the other woman. “But on a hunch, I got someone at the firm to give me the full list of Ken’s clients. I showed that around to some other insurance investigators I know, and it turns out there’ve been three other robberies with very similar MOs. That means in the past month or so, there have been seven high-end home burglaries with a total insured value of over forty million dollars.”
Diego let out a low whistle. “Have there been any robberies since Ken shot himself?”
“None that I know of,” she said. “Which reinforces the idea he was working alone, as difficult as that is to believe. I’m hoping once I do some more digging, I might be able to figure out where he hid the stuff he stole. If not, there’s
