Wolf Bite (The Blue Mountain Wolf Pack #5) - Emma Dean Page 0,45

he practically shoved her out of the room, she realized he didn’t ask her what she’d been thinking about. Liam had left her alone, content to wait and let her figure out her own shit when she needed to.

Liam was one of the most perceptive and understanding people she’d ever met, and that was saying something considering she was a nurse. Zoe glanced up at him, looming over her shoulder like the giant he was.

She felt more relaxed with him at her back, and she felt safer too.

Whether she believed in the concept of mates or not, giving up someone like him would probably be the biggest regret of her life.

“Do you know if you want to stay in Salem?” Liam poured her a second cup of coffee and then sat down next to her as if they’d been married for ten years and did this every day.

He’d even cooked which was good since she hated it. After so many years of cooking for her and her sister she never did it anymore.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to go back to that hospital,” Zoe admitted, taking a sip of her coffee before adding sugar to it. “They would notice a difference and I don’t like lying. It’s exhausting.”

Liam’s chuckle made her smile and she tried to hide it by taking another sip. It was almost disgusting how much she enjoyed being around him, and how much of a different person he made her.

“Then I guess you don’t have to come up with an excuse for your absence.” Liam scooted his chair closer to hers while he ate, eyes on everything with one hand on her thigh.

Her first instinct was to push him off. Anyone could walk in and see, but Zoe had noticed he’d sat next to her and not across. Since then, he hadn’t once looked at her and by the way his eyes were darting around, she knew something was about to happen.

The hand on her leg wasn’t just for affection although she knew it was that too. Liam wanted to know where she was without having to see her. He wanted to be as close as possible in case anything went wrong.

His past trauma was showing, and Zoe felt honored he wasn’t trying to hide it from her. So, instead of pushing him away like she normally would, she placed her free hand on top of his and ate since he’d been so obsessive about feeding her.

“I’m a trauma nurse and I worked at that hospital for years. I need to come up with something if I want to be able to use Rodriguez as a reference, as well as put all my years there on my resumé.” Zoe glanced at Liam and saw him tense slightly, eyes darting toward the front door instead of the basement.

Someone new was coming. She squeezed his hand and tightened her grip on her fork.

“We’ll forge some hospital documents then. You can stay here until you figure out what you want to do.” The calm tone in Liam’s voice was impressive, and so was the smile on his face that almost looked like all his other smiles, but his eyes were tight. “Just so you know, as a shifter you’ll need to figure out which pack you want to join. We’ll sponsor you until you decide on which.”

Zoe turned and frowned at him. “I thought I was going to be in the same pack as my mate.”

“Only if that’s what you want.”

Liam still didn’t think she’d stay. He didn’t think she’d choose him or the mate bond. For some reason that thought made her chest hurt and she rubbed at the spot absently as she tried to figure out what to say to him.

Then she finally heard what he was hearing.

Voices and footsteps she wouldn’t have heard a week ago. Zoe could detect the number of heartbeats as well.

The door opened and she felt a presence that was difficult to describe. It settled over her skin though and something inside of her recognized the power as well as the dominance. Zoe went completely still, but her grip tightened on Liam.

A man walked in with dark skin and long black hair that was half-tied. Next to him was a small red-headed woman and neither of them looked happy. Zoe knew something had happened without having to be told.

It was the same feeling she got right before a major accident was sent their way with a huge number of patients all
