Wolf Bite (The Blue Mountain Wolf Pack #5) - Emma Dean Page 0,3
There was no one else in the woods and Liam stared down at the human male below him.
Fuck, they’d been too late.
This one might survive though.
Liam tried to ignore the way his stomach clenched as he shared a look with Noah. His twin stepped aside and looked down at the female below him, a slight shake of his massive wolf head. The whine that escaped him would have been embarrassing if anyone else had been with them.
Hesitantly he took a step forward, and then another as he approached the small female covered in blood.
Then his nose was pressed to her neck and Liam could smell it – the mate bond. His howl warned the others and then he shifted, determined to do whatever he had to.
Pressing his hand to her neck, he felt a sluggish pulse, not sure what to do. There was so much blood but per his nose, not all of it was hers.
Suddenly her hand came up with the hatchet in it and Liam just barely caught it in time as her eyes flew open.
“Thank fuck,” he muttered. “Where did he bite you?”
His free hand skimmed her body, looking for the bite, but the female’s wide eyes weren’t really seeing him. Just as quickly as she woke up, she was out again.
“Shit!” Liam ran his hands over her, wondering if she would survive the bite or not.
“All you can do is wait,” Noah said with that infuriating calm of his.
“Noah,” Liam snapped, glaring at his twin over his shoulder. “This is my mate. I can’t just fucking wait to see if she’s going to die.”
“Well, you have to,” Noah snapped back, that hot anger hiding the fear underneath that was a mirror to Liam’s. “We can’t take them to a hospital. She’ll survive, or she won’t. You know how this works.”
Shit, this was his worst fucking nightmare.
Gently he plucked the hatchet from her hand and set it aside before pulling her into his arms, blood and all. Liam tucked her head under his chin and held on tight, careful of hurting her.
All he could do was wait while his brother watched over them, keeping an eye on the other human and the two bodies, listening for more in the woods.
“I’m calling Kai,” Noah murmured, watching Liam carefully. “The Alpha will have the answers we need.”
“Dragging all these bodies through the woods is going to be a problem,” Liam muttered. “And we don’t have any clothes.”
“Kai will know what to do,” Noah said calmly, kneeling down to search the backpacks for a phone, grimacing when he found one.
“Now what, genius?” Liam demanded, knowing there wasn’t any service.
“Now I walk until I have service,” Noah snapped, losing his impressive cool for a moment. He pressed the back of his hand to his forehead and sighed.
His twin reached out and gripped the back of Liam’s neck and they sat there for a minute, taking strength in each other.
“I won’t let anything happen to her,” Noah promised. “I will protect her as if she were my own mate. You know that.”
Liam nodded, his grip tightening on the woman below him. Her pulse was irregular and her breathing rapid. It terrified him.
“They could have heard me,” Liam managed.
Noah pulled back and gave him a skeptical look. “Alexander and Olivia could be close, but there’s no way for them to drive this far. We’ll still have to drag all this shit to them.”
“Go find them,” Liam told him. “Leave the phone. I’ll keep the area secure.”
“And the man?” Noah asked, arching an eyebrow in question. “He might actually make it. They were out here together. I don’t want to leave you alone with them.”
Liam looked down at the woman who was his mate and pushed the bloody and matted hair back from her face. “Run fast, Noah. I’m not leaving her.”
He didn’t even know her, but everything in him was leaning toward her like his center of gravity had suddenly and irrevocably shifted. This woman was his whole fucking world now and that terrified the living shit out of him.
After everything they’d been through…he wasn’t sure he could even do the mate thing, but the tiny tether between them refused to be ignored.
“Maybe you should shift,” Noah suggested. “It would keep her warmer.”
Liam nodded and they both shifted. He wrapped his body around hers, and Noah dragged the other human closer so he wouldn’t freeze before Noah turned and ran off, howling long and loud.
Dumping his tail over the man, Liam rested his
