The Vampire's Surprise - Stormy Glenn Page 0,43

walking around the room, running his hands along the wall. "Where in the bloody hell are we?"

Quinn walked over to the door and peered out the small window near the top. There was no glass, but the door wasn't big enough to fit through. "I can't see anything except a hallway and a few more doors like this one."

"There are more cells?" Marcus asked.

Quinn moved out of the way so Marcus could look through the window.

"Hello," Marcus called out in a loud whisper. "Is anyone there?"

When Marcus's eyebrows shot up, Quinn asked, "Is someone there?"

Marcus nodded. "In the cell across from us."

"Who is it?"

"Who are you?" Marcus asked. A moment later, his eyes widened. "Nico? We thought you were dead. Are the others with you?"

"Yes, sire," someone replied. "We got jumped outside the clinic and knocked out. We woke up here."

"Is everyone okay?"

"We're a little banged up, but I'm worried about Saul. They took him away a few hours ago, and he hasn't come back yet."

"Is he being tortured?" Marcus asked.

"It's possible, sire," Nico replied. "We've all been interrogated."

Quinn gasped. He tucked his lips in when Marcus turned to look at him and then covered his mouth with his hand. He knew if vampires were interrogating other vampires, it had to have been brutal.

"Do you know who's doing this?" Marcus asked. "Who's in charge?"

"I don't know, sire. We were questioned concerning the security at the estate, but none of us said anything. I suspect that is why they've had Saul so long. I think they are trying to break him."

"Have you had blood?"

"No, sire."

Crap!

As the only human, Quinn did not like how that sounded. He didn't mind Dmitri drinking directly from him, or maybe one of the kids if there was an emergency, but he didn't like the idea of others drinking from him.

"We'll figure out how to get out of here."

Marcus sounded so confident Quinn almost believed him.

"Someone's coming," Marcus whispered as he turned and pushed Quinn back from the door. "Go over to the corner. Nikolas and I are better able to fight than you."

That was true, but Quinn could fight in a pinch.

He started walking toward the corner, searching the floor for something he could use as a weapon. There really wasn't anything, not even a rock.

When the door opened, Nikolas and Marcus put themselves between Quinn and the door. Two very large men walked in. Quinn could immediately tell they were vampires by the way they hissed at the princes.

It was the man in the three-piece suit that walked in after them that gave him his first taste of real fear. He could have been any businessman walking down the street until you looked into his eyes. The psycho vibe was strong in this one.

"Chambers," Marcus snarled. "I should have known."

"Yes, you should have," the man replied. "You never did see me as much of an adversary, something you will live to regret." The guy smirked. "Well, for a little while anyway."

"You're not going to get away with this, you know."

Chambers chuckled. "Oh, my boy, I already have."

"You think someone won't figure out you've kidnapped the princes of two separate tribes?" Nikolas asked. "People will know."

"And what exactly will they know, Vaile?" Chambers asked. "I didn't kidnap anyone. Rogues did, and once you're out of the way, I'll take back my seat on the council and rid the world of every damn rogue out there, something neither of you two have been able to do. In fact, things have gotten worse under your rule. I'll wager that the council will be more than interested in my plan to eliminate every threat to our kind."

"Does that include humans?"

Chambers shook his head. "Once humans learn their place, they won't be a threat to vampires. They just need to understand who is in charge."

"You mean you?" Nikolas asked. "Still hoping to be made supreme ruler, are you?"

Chambers smirked. "Of course."

"It's not going to work, you know," Marcus said. "There are too many vampires out there who like humans. They're not going to let you enslave them."

"Those that oppose me will be dealt with as a lesson to others, as you will soon learn." Chambers started for the door, but gestured to where Quinn stood in the corner. "Bring the human."

"No!" Nikolas shouted as he went for one of the guards.

Marcus went after the other one, leaving Quinn standing alone in the corner. Chambers ran out of the room, screaming for more guards. They poured into the cell as if
