that he could use some of the energy that could be found in sweets.

“Ira, would you like carrot cake or apple pie?” Wells asked.

That was a very hard decision for him to make as he didn’t often get to eat dessert.

After a while, he still couldn’t decide, so Wells suggested to take a slice of both to share.

That was a great idea.

“What would you like?” he asked me, placing his hand on my thigh again.

“I think I’ll have some apple pie as well,” I told him.

He gave me a quick nod and leaned in to kiss my temple before lifting his hand to get the waitress’s attention.

While he told her our order, I moved my gaze to Grant who had been watching me closely, and I smiled at him to hopefully get him to stop.

It wasn’t bothering me, but it was starting to get too intense for me that I had to look away.

Not sure what he wanted from me, but it was clear that he had a thing for girls my age as he also checked out the waitress as she walked away.

Well, I wasn’t on the market anymore, but even if, I didn’t think Grant and I were a match anyway.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Wells

I didn’t miss the looks Grant shot in Rooney’s direction, as if he was ready to strip her down and show her a good time the way he did with other women he barely knew.

In the dictionary, under the word womanizer, you’d find a picture of Grant’s face.

But it was clear that Rooney didn’t give him one second of her time after noticing his looks too, and she kept smiling at me to assure me she wasn’t going to fall for Grant’s whatever he was doing.

It was getting late in the afternoon and Ira was already tired, ready to head back home.

Although he was a kid with lots of energy, Benny was far more active, so Grant decided to stay for a while longer until his son was worn out.

We said goodbye to them, and as Grant hugged Rooney, I kept my eyes on his hands to make sure he wouldn’t move them further down from where they were on her lower back.

Luckily for him, he didn’t try and make a move and let go of her quickly.

He’ll find his next girl to fuck and send home the next morning.

I was sure of that.

On the car ride home, Ira fell asleep in his car seat and I carried him upstairs while Rooney walked behind me holding his Hulk figures Ira took with him on the car ride.

“I’ll have to wake him soon for dinner. You’ll eat with us, right?” I asked her as we stopped in front of my door.

She nodded and took the keys out of my hand to unlock the door for me. “I’ll go change upstairs and then be right back.”

She stood on her tiptoes to kiss my cheek, then she pushed open the door to make it easier for me to head inside, and once I did, I smiled at her.

“Don’t be too long,” I said before she walked upstairs.

Once inside, I walked into Ira’s bedroom and put him down carefully.

I checked his insulin pump to check what kind of food he needed, then I headed back outside and into the kitchen.

Weekends with Rooney were starting to become a habit, something I couldn’t say no to anymore, even if weekends were usually just for Ira and me to spend time together.

But how could I not let Rooney in if she was taking up most of my thoughts every day?

I was starting to really like her, and after last night, there was no way I could ever push her away from me.

Though, the thought of being in a relationship was scaring the shit out of me.

I didn’t want to commit to something if there was the possibility of losing or hurting her, and I had to keep Ira in mind as well.

If he’d get even more attached, and things didn’t work out the way I wished it would, it wouldn’t be easy for him to let go of Rooney.

His heart needed protection, especially because of him never having a motherly figure in his life.

The other thing that was starting to come up in my head more often was the day he’d finally ask about his mommy.

Until now, he never questioned why his friends had moms but he didn’t.

The older he got, the harder it would be to make him understand what happened at his
