to be sorry for.

“I’ll see you later, Mom. Bye.”

They hung up and Wells put his phone to the side.

“Your mom seems nice,” I told him, finally starting with breakfast.

“She can be a little direct at times. You don’t mind if we head over to her house before we go to town, do you?”

“No, that’s fine with me. I’d love to meet your mom,” I said.

“No doubt she’ll like you. It’ll be like the very first time I brought home a girl.”

I smiled at that, feeling good about the fact that I was the first girl in a long while he introduced to his mother.

Chapter Seventeen

Wells

Breakfast didn’t take as long as I hoped it would to spend a little more alone time with Rooney, but since Ira needed his rain boots to go to the zoo, I didn’t want him to wait for too long.

We finished breakfast and Rooney helped me clean up, which I thought was very sweet of her, and after grabbing Ira’s boots we headed downstairs to my car.

I opened the door for her, and with a soft smile she thanked me quietly before getting inside.

“Here, let me take these,” she said, reaching for the boots in my hands.

“Thanks. Just another hint for you so it makes buying a present for Ira easier,” I said, nodding to the superhero-covered rain boots.

She laughed softly and nodded. “I actually already have something in mind which I think he’ll love.”

“Really? Wanna tell me?”

“Nope. It’s gonna be a surprise and I don’t wanna risk you telling him,” she said with a grin.

“I would never,” I said, covering my chest with my hand as if she had just hurt my feelings.

She chuckled and shook her head, then gently pushed me away from her. “Get in. Ira is waiting for his boots.”

I closed the door and walked around the car to get inside myself, and once we both put on our seatbelts, I pulled out of the parking lot and onto the street.

“The zoo. It’s been a while since I took him there. Sometimes I feel as if I have no ideas for what Ira and I could do together. There are so many places I could take him to, but it somehow always ends up being the park.”

“I’m sure he’s not complaining about that. Besides, Grandmas are always more fun,” Rooney said.

“You’re right about that. But didn’t you enjoy your days with your parents while they rode some bulls in clown costumes?” I asked mockingly.

She laughed. “Hey, I was hoping you wouldn’t bring that up anymore.”

“I think it’s great what they do. A little dangerous, but fun. After you meet my mother today, I definitely wanna meet your parents soon.”

I felt her eyes on me, and when I turned my head to meet her gaze, she was smiling.

“You wanna meet my parents?”

I shrugged. “Guess we’re heading in that direction anyway, aren’t we?”

“Yeah, I guess so.” She chewed on her bottom lip and I turned to look back at the street ahead of me again.

“What will they think about you seeing a guy that could easily be your dad?”

She was quiet for a while, and when I stopped at a red light, I turned to look at her again and saw her brows furrowed.

“I’m not sure. They’re open about most things, but this might be a shock to them as my dad is only a year older than you.”

I could see how that would be a little disturbing to her parents, but as long as Rooney didn’t have a problem with that, there was nothing I had to worry about.

I reached over to place my hand on her thigh and squeezed it gently to ease her mind. “It’s not like we have to go meet them right now. Whenever you’re ready,” I told her.

She gave me a quick nod and a smile. “Okay.”

A few minutes later we arrived at my mother’s house, and before getting out of the car I turned to look at Rooney once again.

“She’s gonna ask lots of questions, and George is probably gonna frown at you the whole time, but that’s just his facial expression. He’s not judging, just observing.”

She laughed and already opened the door. “It’ll be fine, Wells. I’m excited to meet them.”

I had to make sure she wouldn’t leave me after meeting my mother and realizing how intense she could be, so I leaned in and grabbed her jaw tightly before kissing her lips.

She kissed me back, smiling against my lips and letting the door close again
