I also worked every night at home when Ira was down, and on the weekends when I was supposed to relax with a beer in hand, but she didn’t need to know that.
“I’ll make sure we’re not too loud from now on. I’m so sorry once again.”
From now on?
“Did you move in?”
I saw Evie’s roommate move out a few days ago, which I at first thought would make her stop with all the parties she threw weekly, but I guess she already found a new friend.
She nodded, but before she replied, she lifted her finger. “Let me go turn off the music.”
I made Ira let go of her hair, and after a quick disappearance, she was back again without the music playing in the background.
“Evie’s my best friend. I know she can be a little...irritating at times. It won’t happen again, I promise. You need to visit dreamland, hm?” she asked, poking Ira’s chest gently.
He scrunched up his nose and giggled.
Well, shit.
She’s just who I needed in this building.
I smiled at her, then held out my hand while keeping my other arm around Ira. “I’m Wells, this is Ira,” I told her.
“Rooney,” she replied with a beautiful smile stuck in place. “Nice to meet you.”
“You too. I’d love to stay and talk, but I gotta get him to bed. Thank you again, Rooney.”
“Anytime! If there’s anything you need, just let me know.” She looked at me with an apologetic look, then turned to Ira and smiled again. “Goodnight, Ira. Sleep tight,” she told him sweetly.
“Night night!” Ira replied happily, waving at her.
“Goodnight,” I told her, and after staring into her eyes for far too long like an idiot, I walked back down the stairs to finally head to bed.
Rooney, maybe life’s gonna get easier from now on because of you.
Chapter Two
Rooney
“You’re a horrible neighbor,” I told Evie as she walked out of her bedroom with her hair still damp.
She raised a brow, waiting for me to explain myself.
“Wells came upstairs to ask if we could turn down the music because his son couldn’t fall asleep. I can only imagine how many times he came upstairs to ask you to turn it down,” I said with a sigh.
Although I understood Wells, it didn’t occur to me to turn down the volume while I was waiting for Evie to come out of the shower.
Stupid me.
Evie rolled her eyes. “He complains all the time. Is it my problem? There are things called headphones.”
“Evie, he has a three-year-old son. Is he supposed to put headphones on him as well?” I asked with raised brows.
She shrugged.
“The music wasn’t even that loud. He’s just looking for reasons to be annoying.”
It was impossible to have a normal conversation with her when it came to things like this.
She was always in the right, and whoever had a problem with it, just had to deal with it.
It was best for me to let it go, but I’d make sure we weren’t too loud from now on.
Poor Ira.
It was already past eight, and kids his age shouldn’t be up that late.
“It’s Saturday. The evening has just begun, Rooney. Get the snacks and wine out while I get dressed.”
Evie disappeared in her room again, and after letting out a heavy sigh, I headed back to the kitchen.
Living with her was going to be a nightmare, but it was still better than living in that sad, sad dorm.
We would have classes most days anyway, and I could now control the volume level in this apartment to not bother any of the neighbors.
I didn’t understand how someone could be so self-centered and careless about the people living around you, but Evie was difficult to begin with, and telling her to not bother anyone around her wasn’t gonna help.
I brought the wine and snacks into the living room and sat on the couch to wait on her, and while she took her time to dry her hair and get dressed, I pulled out my phone to check on the messages I got while we were eating our self-made pizzas.
AJ’s name lit up the screen, and I tapped the message to read what he had written.
No partying tonight?
I knew they were having a party at the frat house, but even without moving here and having to clean my dorm, I wouldn’t have gone anyway.
I’m exhausted. I’ll see you Monday.
His quick reply was a simple thumbs up emoji, and I was lucky that everything we talked about this morning was put
