been talking to him about what kind of sport he’d like to do once he’s old enough to join a club. He told me he liked anything that had to do with running. Guess I’ll have to let him join in on a few training days to see which sport he likes best.”
“Did you play any sports when you were younger?” I asked.
I leaned my head against my hand, with my elbow propped up on the back of the couch.
“I did competitive swimming and played football for a few years. I found out that I wasn’t much of a team player, so I started going on runs by myself.”
“Do you still go on runs?”
He shook his head. “Ever since Ira, there wasn’t really much time to. I do some home workouts whenever I get the chance to, but other than that, carrying Ira and groceries a few times a day is what keeps me in shape,” he explained with a grin.
I laughed softly and let my eyes wander down to his chest, then moved them further down to his shirt-covered abdomen.
“You look great. I liked eating breakfast with you for the first time ever without you wearing a shirt,” I admitted, making his grin grow wider.
“Figured. You couldn’t take your eyes off me.”
I rolled my eyes at him and slapped his chest gently, and before I knew it, he pulled me closer with one hand on my thigh and the other around my shoulders.
Placing my hand on his chest gently this time, I let him keep me close to his side while our faces were closer than ever.
Our eyes met, but as intense as this was, neither of us made another move.
As if we were indecisive about something.
I knew I was, but if I’d kiss him right now, things might not turn out the way I hoped they would.
But just being close to him was enough for me at the moment.
Besides, Ira was right there, probably sneakily watching us with his eyes peeking over the edge of his book.
He had gone quiet the second Wells pulled me to him.
“I think we’re being watched,” he whispered, a small smirk on his lips and confirming my theory about Ira.
I laughed softly. “Maybe we should get some distance between us,” I suggested.
His hand on my thigh tightened, which I took as a harsh no.
He moved his gaze to Ira, and I did the same only to find him staring at us with the biggest green eyes so similar to his father’s.
We both couldn’t hold in a laugh at the sight of him, and when he realized we had caught him, his cheeks turned a bright red and his eyes quickly disappeared behind the book again.
“He has never seen me with a woman before. This is all new to him,” Wells explained.
I smiled, looking back at him and placing my right hand at the back of his neck to twist his curls around my fingers.
“Are you worried he won’t be okay with…this?”
His eyes moved from mine to my lips, then back up.
“No. He likes you. I think he’d be upset if you would stop showing up,” he said with honesty in his voice.
“And you? Would you be upset if I wouldn’t show up at your door anymore?” I asked, my voice soft.
He studied my face for a while, and his silence was starting to make me nervous.
But instead of answering with words, he lifted his hand and cupped my cheek gently, then he leaned in and tilted my head to the side to place his lips on my jawline.
I closed my eyes to take in this sweet gesture, and once he leaned back again, his eyes immediately found mine.
“I’d be more than upset, Rooney.”
I pressed my lips into a thin line.
As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t keep eye contact with him, so I avoided his eyes by looking down into my lap where his hand still touched my thigh.
I reached for it and let my fingers move gently through his until they interlocked, and I squeezed his hand gently before finally being able to talk.
“I don’t think I can stay away from you,” I whispered.
He smiled and brushed back a few strands of my hair, tucking them behind my ear while his eyes kept wandering over my face.
Words didn’t come easy in situations like these, but that was a good thing.
